Luke Raley

Luke Raley

28-Year-Old OutfielderOF
Tampa Bay Rays
2023 Fantasy Outlook
Raley seemed destined for a bigger major-league opportunity when he was traded from the Dodgers to the Rays shortly before Opening Day, but he wound up with the exact number of plate appearances (72) for the second year in a row and similar production, as well. He crushed the ball again at Triple-A, which should be expected since he was 27 at the time (now 28) and repeating the level for a third time. Raley has good raw power and has shown elite sprint speed in the majors, but he might not ever make enough contact for it to matter. He's out of options, so it could be make-or-break time. ANALYSIS
Raley was scratched from the lineup in the first game of a doubleheader against Boston on Saturday, and he didn't return for the second game, as well. The 28-year-old is feeling well enough to hit in the middle of the Tampa Bay lineup versus the Red Sox on Sunday, and he should be good to go for the Rays' upcoming slate.

Stat Review
How does Luke Raley compare to other hitters?
This section compares his stats with all batting seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 400 plate appearances)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity and Barrels/PA % are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 400 PA) and Hard Hit Rate is benchmarked against last season's data (min 400 PA). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.
  • BB/K
    Walk to strikeout ratio
  • BB Rate
The percentage of plate appearances resulting in a walk.

Past Fantasy Outlooks

2021
2020
Raley made his big-league debut for the Dodgers last season and had a .538 OPS in 72 plate appearances, and he'll now joined the Rays after being traded for third time in his career. Raley spent most of last year at Triple-A Oklahoma City where he slashed .294/.393/.570 with 19 home runs, 69 RBI, 60 runs and eight stolen bases across 72 minor-league appearances He'll compete for a depth role in the outfield behind Tampa Bay's established group of Randy Arozarena, Kevin Kiermaier, Manuel Margot and Austin Meadows, with top prospect Josh Lowe also waiting in the wings. He could find a platoon role in the outfield if an opportunity emerges.
The Dodgers reacquired Raley in February of 2020; they traded him to the Twins in the Brian Dozier deal back in 2018 and got him back in the return for Kenta Maeda. Raley never joined the Dodgers' major-league roster in 2020, but at press time he remains on the club's 40-man roster. That's subject to change as he has to be on the short list for removal as a 26-year-old who had a 30.4 K% and 5.1 BB% at Triple-A. He bats from the left side and Raley has a little pop, but it's going to be tough for him to hit enough to clear the high bar that is required of corner outfielders at the MLB level.
A dislocated tendon in his left ankle held Raley to just 33 games with Triple-A Rochester, but that was enough for the Twins to shield him from the Rule 5 draft, putting him on the 40-man roster. Raley slashed .302/.362/.516 for the Red Wings. He was sidelined from mid-May until late September, rehabbing from surgery. Raley is a stocky 6-foot-4, 235 pounds but is athletic for his frame, totaling 19 triples in 2017-2018 and swiping 17 bases in 18 tries from 2017-2019. Still, his game is power though Raley needs to improve his plate skills to fully tap into it. He fanned 42 times to only seven walks in 138 plate appearances during his truncated 2019 campaign. Look for Raley to return to Rochester to work on contact. His lefty bat could make its way to Minnesota as a reserve if he cuts down on the strikeouts as he can play both corner outfield spots while filling in at center field in a pinch.
