2026 Fantasy Outlook
Black went from being a top 15 prospect in the San Francisco organization to being designated for assignment and eventually traded to Kansas City in 2025. Black made just one appearance with the Giants big league club in 2025 allowing 5 runs in a start just before the break. He spent the rest of the season in Triple-A where he struck out nearly a batter an inning, but struggled with too many walks and homers in an unforgiving Pacific Coast League. Black might find more success in the Kansas City pen as a long man or working in Omaha in a role similar to the one Noah Cameron had to start 2025. He might be best working in long relief as his overall stuff is fringy for a starter, but Kansas City seems to get the most out of these types year in and year out. After all, that Bubic breakout came out of left field so at least mull that over if Black is available in AL-Only reserves or in the latter rounds of the draft-and-hold leagues. Read Past Outlooks
Dealt to Kansas City
The Royals acquired Black from the Giants on Tuesday in exchange for Logan Martin.
Analysis
Black had been designated for assignment by the Giants last week and will now join the Royals' 40-man roster. The 25-year-old spent most of this season at Triple-A Sacramento, where he held a 5.81 ERA and 1.48 WHIP alongside a 114:62 K:BB over 119.1 innings. Black has been used mostly as a starting pitcher to this point in his pro career, though it's not known whether the Royals intend to keep him in that role. The righty has minor-league options remaining.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2025
2024
Black is one of the higher-ranked prospects in the San Francisco organization. He is a former third-round pick after impressive work for Lehigh University and has since pitched effectively as a minor league starter with 378 strikeouts in 320 innings of work. His time in the majors in 2024 was a humbling experience, as the league enjoyed a lot of success off him, hanging a 6.44 ERA and a 1.68 WHIP on him over nine games while hitting over .300 on his three primary pitch offerings. The one area of success he had in the majors was his slider, which was a no-hitter on the season as nobody safely batted one of his 39 sliders into play. Black's calling card is a delivery that provides better than average extension, allowing his pitches to play up a bit more like a Joe Ryan, but only his slider grades as an above-average pitch on the pitch modeling. The extension allowed him to get a better than average whiff rate on a four-seamer, which had a .333 average against, so the path to success for Black could very well be a move to the pen to focus on a fastball and slider approach. Simply put, his outcomes since graduating out of Double-A have been challenging between the big-league humbling and the run environments of the PCL.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Might be rotation option soon
Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area suggests that Black could be an option for San Francisco's rotation in the near future in the wake of Blake Snell's adductor strain.
Analysis
Black missed out on the Giants' season-opening rotation but has a 1.53 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and 20:4 K:BB through four starts at Triple-A Sacramento, which could earn him a promotion soon. San Francisco doesn't necessarily need reinforcements immediately with scheduled off days Thursday and Monday, but a stretch of 16 straight games follows that and will require a full rotation. Snell seems likely to miss more than the 15-day minimum, which could set up Black to make his MLB debut in early May if San Francisco is willing to add him to the 40-man roster.
