Stat Review
How does Matt Koch compare to other relievers?
This section compares his stats with all relief pitcher seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 30 innings)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity, Barrels/BBE %, Balls Hit 95+ MPH %, and Spin Rate are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 30 IP). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.
  • K/BB
    Strikeout to walk ratio.
  • K/9
    Average strikeouts per nine innings.

  • Left On Base
The percentage of base runners that a pitcher strands on base over the course of a season.
  • Exit Velocity
The speed of the baseball as it comes off the bat, immediately after a batter makes contact.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2019
2017
Koch made 14 starts and five relief appearances for a banged-up Diamondbacks team last season, filling in capably with a 4.15 ERA. He showed good control, walking just 6.1% of batters, but he managed just a 13.9% strikeout rate. His 5.83 FIP makes a serious step back appear more likely than even a modest step forward, as does his 5.96 ERA in 11 starts for Triple-A Reno. Scouts were never particularly impressed with Koch's repertoire, as his fastball averages just 91.8 mph and none of his secondaries are much better than average. His low walk rate stemmed at least partially from how hittable he is, as opposing batters made contact on 85.9% of swings (compared to 77.0% on average). He'll be a fifth or sixth starter this season and is likely a streamer at best in most formats.
Koch, who came over to Arizona in the 2015 Addison Reed trade with the Mets, made his Diamondbacks debut last season as a September callup. The 25-year-old impressed in his limited time with the club, appearing in seven games (two starts), and compiling a 2.00 ERA and 0.72 WHIP over 18 innings. That's a very small sample size, but it could be enough for Koch to get a longer look in 2017. He finished 2016 as Arizona's No. 5 starter, but with Zack Greinke coming back from injury and Patrick Corbin possibly reentering the rotation, Koch will likely be on the outside looking in to start the season. He gives the team a good option as an emergency starter or innings eater out of the bullpen. His upside is limited.
