2025 Fantasy Outlook
Grove wasn't able to win a spot in the Dodgers' rotation out of spring training, but they put him in the bullpen and he might have found his niche as a reliever. The 28-year-old discovered more velocity in short bursts, and while he finished the year with a 5.12 ERA, a 3.87 FIP and 54:16 K:BB over 51 innings paints a better picture of how he fared. It's uncertain whether the Dodgers plan to stretch him back out in 2025 or keep him in the bullpen, nor is it clear what the status of Grove's shoulder injury is after he got hurt in the playoffs. Even with health, Grove appears pretty far down in the hierarchy, whether it's in the bullpen or rotation. Read Past Outlooks

Removed from NLDS roster

Shoulder
October 8, 2024
Grove was removed from the Dodgers' NLDS roster Tuesday due to a shoulder injury, Bill Plunkett of The Orange County Register reports.
ANALYSIS
The details of Grove's injury remain unknown, though the issue is apparently severe enough to warrant holding him out for the remainder of the series. The 27-year-old righty would also be ineligible to pitch in the NLCS if Los Angeles advances past the Padres, meaning he will have to wait until the World Series before potentially making another appearance. In the meantime, Ben Casparius will act as Grove's roster replacement.

Stat Review
How does Michael Grove compare to other relievers?
This section compares his stats with all relief pitcher seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 30 innings)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity, Barrels/BBE %, Balls Hit 95+ MPH %, and Spin Rate are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 30 IP). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.
  • K/BB
    Strikeout to walk ratio.
  • K/9
    Average strikeouts per nine innings.
  • BB/9
    Average walks per nine innings.
  • HR/9
Average home runs allowed per nine innings.
  • Fastball
    Average fastball velocity.
  • ERA
Earned run average. The average earned runs allowed per nine innings.
  • WHIP
Walks plus hits per inning pitched.
  • BABIP
Batting average on balls in play. Measures how many balls in play against a pitcher go for hits.
  • GB/FB
Groundball to flyball ratio. The higher the number, the more likely a pitcher is to induce groundballs.
  • Left On Base
The percentage of base runners that a pitcher strands on base over the course of a season.
  • Exit Velocity
The speed of the baseball as it comes off the bat, immediately after a batter makes contact.
  • Barrels/BBE
The percentage of batted ball events resulting in a Barrel. A Barrel is a batted ball with similar exit velocity and launch angle to past ones that led to a minimum .500 batting average and 1.500 slugging percentage.
  • Spin Rate
Spin Rate is the rate of spin on a baseball after it is released. It is measured in revolutions per minute (rpm).
  • Balls Hit 95+ MPH
The percentage of batted balls hit that met or exceeded the 95 MPH threshold.
  • Swinging Strike
The percentage of pitches that result in a swing and a miss.

Past Fantasy Outlooks

2023
Grove spent most of last season in the majors, but he was limited to 18 appearances (12 starts) and 69.0 innings due in part to separate groin and lat injuries that required trips to the IL. His overall stat line included an ugly 6.13 ERA and 1.48 WHIP, though his 4.36 FIP was considerably more tolerable. While Grove's numbers last season weren't impressive, there are some silver linings. First, both his strikeout rate (24.2 percent) and walk rate (6.3 percent) were better than league average and were improvements over his previous big-league campaign. Second, Grove was likely the victim of some bad luck -- the .364 BABIP against him was sixth-highest in the league among pitchers who tossed at least 50 innings. Those angles suggest Grove could yet be a solid big-league arm, but it's unclear if he'll get another chance in the rotation. The righty's opportunity to start last year was largely a result of the Dodgers' desperate need for healthy starters, but the team traded for Tyler Glasnow in the offseason, will have Walker Buehler back in action, and have a number of other promising young arms, including likely starters Bobby Miller and Emmet Sheehan. Clayton Kershaw could also possibly return, and Los Angeles may not be done adding arms via trade or free agency. Grove gave up zero runs and just two hits with an 11:2 K:BB over 8.1 innings across the five games during which he pitched fewer than three frames last year, so there's evidence that his best role may be out of the bullpen.
Grove got his first taste of the majors last season, working mostly as a spot starter and compiling a 4.60 ERA and 1.43 WHIP over seven appearances spanning 29.1 innings. His 7.5% walk rate was in line with his season numbers between Double- and Triple-A, but his 18.0 percent strikeout rate didn't come close to the over-a-strikeout-per-inning promise he showed in each of his minor-league stops. His three-pitch arsenal (mid-90s fastball, high-80s slider, high-70s curveball) is good enough for him to grow in that regard, and Grove has in fact impressed with his overall improvement after posting a 7.86 ERA over 71 innings at Double-A in 2021. Depending on what the Dodgers do in the offseason, there may be a back-end rotation spot up for grabs, and Grove should be a candidate if that scenario plays out. However, there remains a possibility that he ends up in the bullpen long-term.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Name dropped in Ohtani rumors
PLos Angeles Dodgers
July 20, 2023
Grove could be an outgoing piece if the Dodgers pursue a Shohei Ohtani trade, speculates Jim Bowden of The Athletic.
ANALYSIS
Whether or not the Angels are open to moving Ohtani to the crosstown rival is unknown, but it would take quality and quantity from the Dodgers. Grove hasn't wowed across parts of two MLB seasons and has a 6.40 ERA in 12 outings this year, but the 2018 second-round pick is likely on the table if the Angels are fond of him.
