Minnesota Twins AAA
2025 Fantasy Outlook
Abel's prospect stock has trended down each year since he was selected No. 15 overall in 2020. Initially he was seen as a potential No. 1 pitching prospect type, but he has never posted a walk rate below 10 percent and his stuff has stagnated. Abel logged a 6.46 ERA, 1.81 WHIP and a 117:78 K:BB in 108.2 innings at Triple-A last season and is unlikely to be more than an up-and-down arm in 2025. The Phillies added him to the 40-man roster, which is the natural thing to do with a pitcher you've invested this much in, but Abel's name value and pedigree are doing all of the lifting with regards to any remaining perceived dynasty value. The Twins optioned Abel to Triple-A St. Paul on Sunday.
Analysis
Minnesota didn't immediately replace Abel on the roster ahead of Sunday's 7-2 win over the Padres, so the Twins will have three spots to fill when the active roster expands from 26 to 28 men Monday. Abel's demotion comes after he was moved to the bullpen for this weekend's series against the Padres following a rough start against the White Sox on Aug. 23, when he served up six earned runs across three innings. The right-hander didn't fare any better in his lone relief appearance, as he gave up six runs (five earned) on seven hits and one walk over one inning in Saturday's 12-3 loss.

Stat Review
How does Mick Abel compare to other starting pitchers?
This section compares his stats with all starting pitcher seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 120 innings)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity, Barrels/BBE %, Balls Hit 95+ MPH %, and Spin Rate are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 120 IP). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.
  • K/BB
    Strikeout to walk ratio.
  • K/9
    Average strikeouts per nine innings.
  • BB/9

Groundball to flyball ratio. The higher the number, the more likely a pitcher is to induce groundballs.
  • Left On Base
The percentage of base runners that a pitcher strands on base over the course of a season.
  • Exit Velocity
The speed of the baseball as it comes off the bat, immediately after a batter makes contact.

The percentage of batted ball events resulting in a Barrel. A Barrel is a batted ball with similar exit velocity and launch angle to past ones that led to a minimum .500 batting average and 1.500 slugging percentage.
  • Spin Rate
Spin Rate is the rate of spin on a baseball after it is released. It is measured in revolutions per minute (rpm).

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2024
2023
2021
Abel may have been passed by Andrew Painter as the most exciting pitching prospect in the Phillies' organization, but he got to spend 2023 as the team's most exciting healthy pitching prospect after Painter suffered an elbow injury in March which wound up requiring Tommy John surgery. In some circumstances, that status would have led Abel to a potentially premature MLB debut, but the Phillies didn't wind up needing to reach into their minor-league system for additional depth, and Abel's numbers in 22 outings for Double-A Reading meant he wasn't forcing his way in. Abel's 27.5% strikeout rate was strong and was nearly an exact match for his 27.6% mark from 2022, but his already worrisome 10.6% walk rate jumped all the way to 13.5%. The result was a rather ordinary 4.14 ERA and 1.24 WHIP. Abel won't turn 23 until August, so he has plenty of time to get his 6-foot-5 frame under control and learn to find the zone on a more regular basis. If he does, his stuff will make him a frontline arm, but each season in which he continues to walk too many batters increases the likelihood that he tops out as an unreliable back-end starter or a reliever.
The Phillies present us with a great example of why it's fine to draft prep righties in first-year player drafts, it's just not wise to draft them with high picks. Abel was a trendy early-round target in 2021 and Andrew Painter was an affordable mid-round option in 2022, and now Painter's dynasty value greatly outpaces that of Abel. Standing 6-foot-5 and armed with a power arsenal, Abel has consistently missed bats (K% over 27% at every stop) while also consistently walking too many batters (BB% over 10% at every stop). His 1.33 WHIP in 108.1 innings at High-A and Double-A is a good illustration of the risk he still carries, even though he is healthy and in the upper levels. Additionally, Abel is an extreme flyball pitcher (38.9 GB% at High-A, 26.3 GB% at Double-A) who will someday call Citizens Bank Park home, which is not a great recipe. He won't turn 22 until August, and a significant step forward with his control could lead to a breakout year. If he doesn't take that step forward, president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski could use him to upgrade the big-league club at the trade deadline.
The only real knock on Abel is that he comes from the riskiest subset of draft prospects: prep righties. As such, the expectation should be that he won't work out, but he could be an ace if he does, which is why the Phillies selected him with the No. 15 overall pick in last year's draft. He sat at 95-99 mph with his fastball during the fall instructional league, and at 6-foot-5, 190 pounds, he could be throwing even harder (without increasing his effort) in a year or two. Abel has the best command among last year's crop of high school arms -- he projects for plus command down the road. His plus mid-80s slider is his best offspeed pitch, and he is currently working on improving his changeup and curveball, both of which have promise. On paper, Abel looks like a future No. 1 or No. 2 starter, but as we are often reminded, high school right-handers can often break our hearts in pro ball.

Possible trade chip?
PPhiladelphia Phillies  AAA
June 12, 2024
The Phillies could consider trading Abel to improve the major-league roster this summer, reports Adam Aaronson of The Philly Voice.
Analysis
Philadelphia has been reluctant to part with top prospects in recent years, but 2024 could be different with the club holding the best record in the National League. Abel has struggled at the Triple-A level this season with a 6.31 ERA, 1.86 WHIP and 39:33 K:BB across 45.2 innings, so the Phillies wouldn't be selling high, but the 22-year-old could still turn things around ahead of the trade deadline.
