2025 Fantasy Outlook
Schanuel's profile for a first baseman is unusual, much like his batting stance. He's displayed a mastery of the strike zone early on in his big-league career, having put up an 11.2 percent walk rate, 17 percent strikeout rate and 89.5 percent zone contact rate in 2024. On the flip side, Schanuel's 25.4 percent hard-hit rate and 3.5 percent barrel rate is more befitting of a backup middle infielder. It also doesn't help that many of Schanuel's batted balls are hit in the dirt, as his 30.6 percent fly ball rate ranked 119th out of 129 qualifiers. He can still be a useful player for the Angels given his on-base ability, but it's difficult to imagine Schanuel ever becoming a 20-homer hitter without a swing adjustment. Read Past Outlooks

2024 Fantasy Outlook
No team is more likely to rush a prospect to the majors than the Angels and no prospect in last year's draft class had a more impressive command of the strike zone than Schanuel, so in that sense it was a perfect match when they selected him with the 11th overall pick. He played in more games in the majors (29) than in the minors (22) after getting drafted while also missing short stints with minor ailments (illness, shoulder, knee). There's little doubt the Angels will give Schanuel everyday playing time going forward and his swing decisions and contact skill are advanced enough that he'll get on base at a high clip, especially compared to most rookies. The big philosophical question is whether or not he's a worthwhile investment in dynasty or redraft leagues when his projected power output is so minimal relative to other first basemen. He had a max exit velocity of 103.5 mph, a 2.2 Barrel% and a 49.4 percent groundball rate. Schanuel doesn't hit the ball hard enough or in the air with enough regularity to project for more than 15 home runs, even with everyday playing time. His appeal lessens further when considering how bad the Angels lineup might be over the next few years.

Latest Fantasy Rumors

Scoring change ends streak
Schanuel's on-base streak retroactively ended at 30 games after his single March 30 against Baltimore was changed to an error, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports.
ANALYSIS
The 22-year-old was pushing for the longest on-base streak to begin a career this weekend against the Red Sox, but the late scoring change took away that opportunity. Schanuel has now reached base in seven of eight games this season with eight walks in 32 plate appearances, but he otherwise hasn't provided much offensively, having gone 2-for-22.
