OFSt. Louis Cardinals
May 28, 2023
Mercado is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Guardians.
ANALYSIS
After getting steady run in the St. Louis lineup following his promotion from Triple-A Memphis on May 17, Mercado seems to have settled back into a fourth-outfielder role while Dylan Carlson (ankle) and Tyler O'Neill (back) are on the shelf. Alec Burleson and Brendan Donovan will both pick up starts at the two corner-outfield spots for the third game in a row against a right-handed starting pitcher while Mercado remains on the bench. Mercado should still have a path to playing time versus left-handed pitching, however.

Stat Review
How does Oscar Mercado compare to other hitters?
This section compares his stats with all batting seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 400 plate appearances)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity and Barrels/PA % are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 400 PA) and Hard Hit Rate is benchmarked against last season's data (min 400 PA). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.
  • BB/K

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2021
2020
2019
Make no mistake about it; 2020 was a disaster for Mercado. He was a colossal bust in fantasy, slashing .111/.167/.111 with one stolen base in his first 17 games before being optioned off Cleveland's active roster. It did not get much better for him following his return to the big-league team a few weeks later and Mercado ended up logging just one at-bat in the postseason. He was a perfect 3-for-3 on the basepaths and the speed should keep him on your radar. He swiped 15 bags in 2019 while playing in just 115 games and he chipped in 15 HR in his debut as well, although baseline power expectations are tough to nail down with a player like Mercado given the ball's varying liveliness from year to year. He should get a chance to show he can rebound, and his leash should be longer in a longer season. If he can't trim his strikeout rate back down and produce, Mercado could transition to a fourth-outfielder role.
Mercado received a promotion to the big leagues in mid-May and moved into an everyday role within a few weeks, eventually settling into center field (where he made 77 starts). He slashed .269/.318/.443 with 15 home runs, 54 RBI and 15 stolen bases in 115 games during his age-24 season. Mercado never flashed significant offensive ability in the upper minors until last season, when he posted a 131 wRC+ before his call-up. He hit 19 homers between Triple-A and the majors, marking only the second time in his professional career that he's hit double-digit long balls. Mercado eclipsed 30 stolen bases in four minor-league seasons and totaled 29 in 2019 between Triple-A and the majors, so he's likely to provide more value on the basepaths. Cleveland's outfield remains devoid of top-level talent entering 2020, so Mercado should have every chance to retain a starting job.
Mercado was traded at the deadline from St. Louis to Cleveland in a rare prospect-for-prospect trade, but remained at the Triple-A level for the remainder of the season. In 132 games at the highest level of the minors between the two organizations, the 24-year-old managed a .278/.349/.390 line, good for a roughly average 99 wRC+. That figure certainly doesn't excite, but it's fine for a player who profiles well in center field. Mercado isn't going to be a star, but he's now with an organization that has a shortage of quality outfielders. His combination of an adequate bat and good defense could be enough to earn him a run in the lineup at some point. If that happens, Mercado's speed in particular will interest fantasy owners, as he's swiped an average of 39.5 bags over the last four seasons.
