Lambert signed a one-year contract with the Yakult Swallows of Nippon Professional Baseball.
ANALYSIS
Lambert has spent his entire pro career with the Rockies and has recently served primarily as a reliever. He should have a chance to start in Japan, and he could potentially return stateside due to the short-term deal.

Stat Review
How does Peter Lambert compare to other relievers?
This section compares his stats with all relief pitcher seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 30 innings)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity, Barrels/BBE %, Balls Hit 95+ MPH %, and Spin Rate are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 30 IP). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.
  • K/BB
    Strikeout to walk ratio.
  • K/9
    Average strikeouts per nine innings.
  • BB/9
    Average walks per nine innings.
  • HR/9
Average home runs allowed per nine innings.
  • Fastball
    Average fastball velocity.
  • ERA
Earned run average. The average earned runs allowed per nine innings.
  • WHIP
Walks plus hits per inning pitched.
  • BABIP
Batting average on balls in play. Measures how many balls in play against a pitcher go for hits.
  • GB/FB
Groundball to flyball ratio. The higher the number, the more likely a pitcher is to induce groundballs.
  • Left On Base
The percentage of base runners that a pitcher strands on base over the course of a season.
  • Exit Velocity
The speed of the baseball as it comes off the bat, immediately after a batter makes contact.
  • Barrels/BBE
The percentage of batted ball events resulting in a Barrel. A Barrel is a batted ball with similar exit velocity and launch angle to past ones that led to a minimum .500 batting average and 1.500 slugging percentage.
  • Spin Rate
Spin Rate is the rate of spin on a baseball after it is released. It is measured in revolutions per minute (rpm).
  • Balls Hit 95+ MPH
The percentage of batted balls hit that met or exceeded the 95 MPH threshold.

Past Fantasy Outlooks

2016
Lambert worked as a swingman for Colorado last season with 11 starts in 25 appearances, and he posted a 4.50 ERA as a starter and a 6.89 ERA in relief. He was limited by injury for most of 2021 and 2022 but was able to cover 109 innings between Triple-A and the majors last year. Lambert was once one of the Rockies top pitching prospects, and his decent numbers as a starter in 2023 could garner him another look in 2024. However, even if he makes the rotation, his fantasy upside is limited at best with half his starts slated to come at Coors Field.
Lambert has completed just 30.1 innings since the start of the 2020 season, with only 5.2 of those frames coming at the major-league level (in 2021). The right-hander underwent Tommy John surgery in July of 2020 which knocked him out through the end of 2021 and last year he was plagued by a forearm issue. Lambert didn't need surgery for the forearm injury and the expectation is that he'll be ready roll for the start of 2023. The Rockies still have hope for a guy who used to be one of their top pitching prospects, but Lambert has been terrible during his major-league career and even at his best has never been much of a bat-misser.
Lambert made the first 19 starts of his big-league career in 2019 as the Rockies cycled through rotation options, but he failed to find much success, finishing with a 7.25 ERA. Coors Field and a juiced ball may have inflated that number somewhat, but it's still not good enough in any environment, as evidenced by his park-adjusted ERA- of 144. Lambert had never been a particularly high strikeout guy in the minors, but his 13.6% strikeout rate as a rookie was quite poor. The righty has a long way to go to be an effective weapon in the majors, though at age 22 and with a decent amount of prospect pedigree, he could still get there. The Rockies' rotation looks likely to remain weak in 2020, so Lambert could be in line for more opportunities to prove his worth. Given the extent of his struggles as a rookie, though, there's not much reason for fantasy owners to invest until he starts turning the corner.
The Rockies selected Lambert with the 44th overall pick in June, and persuaded him to rescind his commitment to UCLA with a $1.495 million signing bonus, almost $100,000 more than his projected slot value. Standing 6-foot-2, 185 pounds, Lambert has the measurables you typically look for in a starter, and features three pitches that project as average-or-better offerings in time. He made eight starts for rookie-level Grand Junction after being drafted, going 0-4 despite allowing only 12 earned runs in 31.1 innings with a respectable 26:11 K:BB. Turning just 19 in April, Lambert may need to prove more in rookie ball before the Rockies think about a full-season assignment. Considering the team context and lack of proximity to the majors, Lambert can probably be left alone in dynasty and keeper leagues for now.

August 9, 2024
Lambert was removed from his relief appearance in Thursday's 9-1 loss to the Mets due to what Rockies manager Bud Black described as a "severely bruised" left thumb, MLB.com reports. "It ballooned up as the outing went on," Black said after Lambert was struck by a Francisco Lindor line drive in the fourth inning. "It got to the point where it was becoming a little bit of a distraction for him to pitch, so that's why we got him out of there. We took X-rays, and they were negative."

Expected to rejoin big club
PColorado Rockies  F
July 2, 2023
The Rockies plan to have Lambert stretch out over three starts in Triple-A Albuquerque's rotation before potentially bringing him back to the big leagues, according to Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post.
ANALYSIS
The 26-year-old delivered three scoreless frames as an opener Saturday, but he was demoted to Triple-A on Sunday with the plan of having him potentially rejoin Colorado after the All-Star break. Lambert has primarily worked as a reliever in the majors this year and has a 6.29 ERA in 15 appearances.
