November 25, 2024
The Orioles signed Alcantara to a minor-league contract Monday, Andy Kostka of TheBaltimoreBanner.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Alcantara last pitched in the United States in 2018 with Triple-A Nashville before spending the last six years overseas. Most recently, the left-hander appeared in 12 games with the Doosan Bears of the KBO in 2024, recording a 4.76 ERA and 1.24 WHIP with 34 strikeouts over 64.1 innings. He'll look to impress with the Orioles in order to potentially make his return to professional baseball in America.

The Athletics used Alcantara as a starter from 2012 to 2016 before converting him into a swingman last season. He made 26 appearances between Triple-A and Oakland last year, 19 of which came in relief. The move to the bullpen has not helped him gain anything in strikeouts as he still has a below-average rate, and he has been awful over 46 major-league innings as he has allowed 14 homers and owns a 7.19 ERA for his career. He should be left in the bullpen to try to figure out where his best fit is moving forward, because it will not be in the starting rotation with his inability to miss bats. The problem is, he is already out of options so he will either have to make the bullpen out of camp or be exposed to waivers for another team to figure him out. Either way, he can safely be kept off your roster until something in his repertoire changes.
Alcantara was once widely regarded as Oakland's top pitching prospect, but he underwent Tommy John surgery in 2014, which obviously slowed his progress. Though he had a phenomenal eight-game stint at Triple-A Nashville last year (six earned runs, three walks), Alcantara did little to impress over his first five major league starts. He has a little more growing to do -- after all, he's logged only 68 innings above Double-A. He may need to change things to earn fantasy trust: Though his fastball touches the mid- to high-90s, his approach works more toward contact. He hasn't punched out more than 7.5 batters per nine at any level. Of course, the real optimism lies in his control (1.9 BB/9 in minors). He may compete for one of the back-end rotation spots in spring training.
Alcantara started the season in Double-A and was one of the A's top pitching prospects, but his season was cut short by Tommy John surgery in May after just three starts. As a result, Alcantara will likely miss most of the 2015 season as the A's will be careful with him coming off of major surgery. His 2013 season showed plenty of promise, as he carried a 124:24 K:BB over 156.1 innings between Low-A Beloit and High-A Stockton, although there is some question as to how frequently he will be able to miss bats as he moves through the upper levels of the minors. If he's able to maintain good control post surgery, Alcantara should be able to get back on track in his development toward becoming a very capable innings eater. Having just turned 22 in December, Alcantara will likely head back to Double-A either late in 2015 or to start 2016.
The A's acquired Alcantara in the Andrew Bailey trade that also netted them Josh Reddick two offseasons ago. Alcantara finished 2013 with 12 wins in a season split between Low-A and High-A, and he was very strong in his 27 starts while putting together a 3.11 ERA and 1.16 WHIP. Alcantara has excellent control (1.4 BB/9), which makes up for his non-dominant strikeout rate (7.1 K/9). He will be 21 this season and seems likely to be starting games in Double-A at some point, possibly right out of the gate this season. He is considered one of the top arms in the Oakland system and the A's showed their faith in him by adding him to the 40-man roster in the winter in order to protect him from the Rule 5 draft.
