2023 Fantasy Outlook
Sanmartin was utterly dreadful in four starts for the Reds last season. He put up a 19.85 ERA and 3.09 WHIP in those outings, with batters hitting .456 with a 1.294 OPS against the left-hander. Sanmartin was much better in relief, though, with a 2.96 ERA over 41 appearances while limiting them to a .694 OPS. The southpaw's drastic platoon splits (.717 OPS versus left-handed batters, .933 OPS against right-handers) also point to the bullpen being his long-term home. Sanmartin currently projects as the lone lefty in manager David Bell's relief corps, so he could find himself in high-leverage spots when the situation calls for it. Read Past Outlooks

Moved to 60-day IL
The Reds transferred Sanmartin (elbow) from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day injured list Sunday, Paige Leckie of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Sanmartin is currently expected to miss the next six weeks while he recovers from a stress reaction in his left elbow. The southpaw reliever is now off the 40-man roster and could be back as a middle-innings option for the Reds right around the All-Star break.

2022 Fantasy Outlook
Sanmartin is still a bit of an unknown in many circles, but he had a 3.94 ERA, 54.0 GB% and 19.2 K-BB% in 82.1 innings at Triple-A and then finished his season with two strong starts in the majors. Of course, it helped that both of those starts came against the Pirates. The 25-year-old lefty only averaged 89.5 mph on his fourseam fastball, but it had serious horizontal break and was very tough to pick up from a three-quarters lefty slot. His slider and changeup are strong secondary offerings, so it's a starter's repertoire. Given the lack of velocity, we recommend treading cautiously, as deception artists often have a short shelf life in the majors. However, Sanmartin has a decent chance of opening the year with a spot in the Reds' starting rotation, and he has a good recent statistical track record.
