2024 Fantasy Outlook
Pinto is a 27-year-old catcher with a relatively underwhelming major-league resume, but he might be ready to emerge as a useful option at fantasy baseball's shallowest position if the Rays keep the runway clear. He's logged only 188 total plate appearances at the big-league level and has a weak .235/.255/.399 slash line to show for it, but Pinto plays stout defense behind the dish and the Tampa Bay front office seems to believe that he could soon blossom offensively. There is evidence to support that idea, as the Venezuelan native boasts an .844 OPS with 35 home runs and 113 RBI in 162 career games with Triple-A Durham. Christian Bethancourt and Francisco Mejia are both out of the picture now, so 2024 could be Pinto's year. Read Past Outlooks

Set up for big workload
Rays manager Kevin Cash said Tuesday that the team is "going to lean heavy" on Pinto at catcher this season, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
ANALYSIS
The Rays traded Christian Bethancourt this offseason and didn't really replace him, leaving Alex Jackson and Rob Brantly to battle for the backup job. Pinto popped six home runs in 38 games last season and rated very well from an average exit velocity (90.5 mph) and barrel rate (15.9 percent) perspective, but a 34:2 K:BB was worrisome. It sounds like he's going to receive all the playing time he can handle, and he has enough power to be relevant in two-catcher leagues.

2023 Fantasy Outlook
Pinto has been in the organization since 2014 and has hit .277 as a minor leaguer in over 2100 plate appearances, but has done little in his exposure at the big league level other than look like the prototypical backup catcher. He is third on the depth charts as things stand in November behind Francisco Mejia and Cristian Bethancourt and could spend another season on the RDU to TPA shuttle depending on what the club does later this winter. Back to back seasons of slugging percentages in Durham are both a mixture of some improvements he has made in his development along with a heavy dose of home cooking as The DAP is one of the best hitting environments in the minors.
