$Signed a two-year, $5.75 million contract extension with the Marlins in March of 2022. Traded to the Red Sox in January of 2023. Contract includes $3.75 million team option ($250,000 buyout) for 2024.

January 30, 2023
The Red Sox acquired Bleier from the Marlins on Monday in exchange for Matt Barnes and cash, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Bleier made 55 appearances for the Marlins in 2022 and turned in a 3.55 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and 32:10 K:BB over 50.2 innings. With Boston recently dealing away Josh Taylor, the addition of Bleier gives the Red Sox a much-needed lefty arm in the bullpen. Bleier could be a factor in the middle innings or as a setup man for the Red Sox in 2023, but he's unlikely to see many save opportunities.

Stat Review
How does Richard Bleier compare to other relievers?
This section compares his stats with all relief pitcher seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 30 innings)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity, Barrels/BBE %, Balls Hit 95+ MPH %, and Spin Rate are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 30 IP). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.
  • K/BB
    Strikeout to walk ratio.
  • K/9
    Average strikeouts per nine innings.
  • BB/9
    Average walks per nine innings.
  • HR/9
Average home runs allowed per nine innings.
  • Fastball
    Average fastball velocity.
  • ERA
Earned run average. The average earned runs allowed per nine innings.
  • WHIP
Walks plus hits per inning pitched.
  • BABIP
Batting average on balls in play. Measures how many balls in play against a pitcher go for hits.
  • GB/FB
Groundball to flyball ratio. The higher the number, the more likely a pitcher is to induce groundballs.
  • Left On Base
The percentage of base runners that a pitcher strands on base over the course of a season.
  • Exit Velocity
The speed of the baseball as it comes off the bat, immediately after a batter makes contact.
  • Barrels/BBE
The percentage of batted ball events resulting in a Barrel. A Barrel is a batted ball with similar exit velocity and launch angle to past ones that led to a minimum .500 batting average and 1.500 slugging percentage.
  • Spin Rate
Spin Rate is the rate of spin on a baseball after it is released. It is measured in revolutions per minute (rpm).
  • Balls Hit 95+ MPH
The percentage of batted balls hit that met or exceeded the 95 MPH threshold.
  • Swinging Strike
The percentage of pitches that result in a swing and a miss.

2017
Since making his major-league debut as a 29-year old in 2016, Bleier has posted an ERA below 2.00 in three seasons and an ERA below 3.00 in all but one campaign. He relies on an extreme groundball approach and in turn limiting home runs. That's proven effective, as he's allowed only 0.6 HR/9 while inducing groundballs at a 66% clip across 249 career innings. In 2021, Bleier picked up a career-high 20 holds, with 51 of his 68 appearances coming in the seventh inning or later and 40 coming with the game either tied or the team leading by three runs or fewer. However, that's likely to be the peak of his production, as his 19.6 K% in 2021 was a career-high rate and doesn't fit a typical closer role. Nevertheless, he's proven to be a trusted member of the Marlins bullpen and could be in a position to rack up holds once again.
A lefty member of the Orioles' back-end committee in 2019, Bleier was flipped to the Marlins for a PTBNL a week into the 2020 season. He missed time with a triceps strain, but his performance on the field impressed the Marlins enough for the team to tender him a contract for 2021.
For the third straight season, Bleier posted a sub-2.00 ERA, despite most ERA estimators portending about twice that. Granted, two of the three years were partial campaigns. Before season-ending surgery in June on his left shoulder, Bleier tossed 32 frames with a 1.93 ERA, essentially half of a 3.81 SIERA and 4.02 xFIP. Usually, it's a high strikeout rate driving this, but Bleier matched his career mark of just 11%, instead entrusting his ability to locate, a 59% groundball rate and a 21% hard-hit rate, third lowest among pitchers tossing at least 30 innings. The southpaw relies on an 89-mph sinker and cutter, mixing in a fastball, curve and slider. Even though Bleier is supposed to be fully recovered from surgery, his low strikeout rate precludes him from fantasy relevance, even in the off chance he continues to defy the ERA estimators.
Bleier came over to the Orioles from the Yankees during spring training in a rare intra-divisional trade between the two clubs. He flirted with danger a fair bit in 2017, but his 88 percent strand rate allowed him to escape with strong ratios. His FIP checked in at 4.42 and his BABIP was well below league-average at .268. Outpitching his peripherals to that extent in a second consecutive year would be an astounding feat. History suggests extreme regression is likely. Look for Bleier to be a heavily-used middle reliever that doesn't provide the strikeout (3.7 K/9 in 2017) or ratio upside to be useful in the vast majority of formats.
At age 29, Bleier made his major league debut and served primarily as a lower-leverage, left-handed specialist. Though he ended up shuttling back and forth between the majors and minors, the Bleier was more effective with the Yankees and worked to a 1.96 ERA over 23 appearances. His stuff isn't overpowering -- his average fastball velocity in the majors was just a tick over 89 mph -- so the 29-year-old has always relied more on inducing groundballs than racking up strikeouts. That held true in his rookie season with just 13 strikeouts in 23 innings, but he's been able to make it work without swing-and-miss stuff for the most part. Bleier was also especially effective against lefties, as he limited them to just a .150/.209/.200 slash line. It's unlikely he'll turn into much of a contributor in fantasy formats, but he should get a shot to make the Opening Day roster.
