Returns to Triple-A
PPhiladelphia Phillies  AAA
September 9, 2024
The Phillies optioned Johnson to Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Monday.
ANALYSIS
Johnson's stay in Philadelphia will last just one start, as he'll head back to Triple-A after he was lit up for nine earned runs over 2.1 innings during his MLB debut in Sunday's 10-1 loss to the Marlins. The Phillies recalled left-hander Tyler Gilbert to provide some extra coverage in the bullpen in the short term, but it's not immediately clear whom Philadelphia might turn to as Johnson's replacement in the rotation.

Stat Review
How does Seth Johnson compare to other starting pitchers?
This section compares his stats with all starting pitcher seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 120 innings)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity, Barrels/BBE %, Balls Hit 95+ MPH %, and Spin Rate are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 120 IP). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.
  • K/BB

  • K/9
    Average strikeouts per nine innings.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2024
2021
He returned last season from Tommy John surgery and threw just 10.1 innings. He converted from shortstop to starting pitcher in college before the Rays selected him 40th overall in 2019. The Orioles were willing to stash him on the 40-man roster while he recovered from Tommy John surgery. He has a plus fastball, plus slider, but this will be a big year for him to show he has the command, health and third pitch to remain a starting pitcher.
Johnson is following a similar path to Dodgers top pitching prospect Josiah Gray. Both were amateur shortstops who moved to the mound in effort to advance their baseball careers. Johnson, whom the Rays selected with the No. 40 overall pick in 2019, had a low-to-mid-90s fastball with late life when he was drafted, and he was touching 99 mph during the fall instructional league. Like Gray, he seems to be making exponential improvements as he gets further removed from being a position player. Johnson's slider is a second plus pitch and he has shown more feel for a changeup than the typical conversion project. The 6-foot-1 righty has an athletic delivery and projects for at least average command and control. He should spend his age-22 season at High-A with a chance to see Double-A if he impresses.
