Anderson signed a minor-league contract with the Angels on Friday.
Analysis
Anderson elected to test free agency after clearing waivers Thursday, but he'll quickly reunite with the Angels after just a day on the open market. The 30-year-old righty owns an unsightly 10.32 ERA and 2.03 WHIP through 11.1 innings in the majors and isn't likely to make an impact with the big club if he makes it back to Anaheim before the season ends.

Stat Review
How does Shaun Anderson compare to other relievers?
This section compares his stats with all relief pitcher seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 30 innings)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity, Barrels/BBE %, Balls Hit 95+ MPH %, and Spin Rate are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 30 IP). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.
  • K/BB

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2021
2020
A starter throughout his early career, Anderson displayed some success coming out of the bullpen in 2019, so his role was up in the air last spring. He was initially stretched out but had a rough Cactus League and was sent to Triple-A. It's unclear how Anderson would have been used had there been a minor-league season, but when he was recalled in the summer, Anderson worked as a reliever. Unfortunately, he was unable to recapture the skills exhibited the previous season, yielding 12 walks and three homers in just 15 frames. Still just 26 years old, Anderson remains interesting. He posted an improved 13.7% swinging-strike rate, fueling a 26.9 K%, and last season's walks and homers were out of sync with Anderson's history. While there isn't enough here to expend draft capital, Anderson is worth tracking as Oracle Park is a great place to pitch and the Giants' bullpen is unsettled.
The Giants could look to stretch Anderson back out in spring training. His best path to 2020 fantasy relevance probably lies in the bullpen, where roles are in flux following the offseason departure of Will Smith. Anderson's ERA in relief was even worse than his 5.33 mark as a starter, though a lot of that damage was done in his final appearance of the season and the skills definitely played up. In 13.1 relief innings, Anderson had a 25.4 K% and 3.51 FIP, compared to a 15 K% and 4.97 FIP as a starter. He even picked up his first two career saves in September when Smith was unavailable. New manager Gabe Kapler will start with a blank slate, likely leaving roles up for grabs in spring training. Tony Watson has some experience closing and Anderson doesn't bring the velocity we typically like to see from a closer, but in the bullpen he'd be on the short list when the matchups call for a righty in the ninth.
