2024 Fantasy Outlook
After spending 10 seasons in Japan, Fujinami's first season stateside was a mixed bag. His career-long control issues surfaced early on as the 6-foot-6 right-hander struggled to command his triple-digit fastball, walking 24 over his first 30 innings to go along with disastrous ratios (12.00 ERA, 1.89 WHIP). Even the poor-performing Athletics were forced to evaluate Fujinami's role and shifted him to relief before subsequently trading him to Baltimore. He fared slightly better working in shorter stints, but still performed poorly overall, finishing the season with one of the worst walk rates (12.6%) in the league. Fujinami didn't strike many batters out either, as his 23.2% strikeout percentage was slightly below league average. Now a free-agent, look for the 29-year-old to land a short-term deal with a team who can capitalize on his velocity and potentially fix his control issues. Read Past Outlooks

The Mets optioned Fujinami to minor-league camp Saturday, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Fujinami joined the Mets on a one-year, $3.35 million deal back on Feb. 2 after spending 2023 with the Athletics and Orioles. He struggled in spring training, allowing five earned runs on four hits and four walks while striking out five over 3.2 innings. Fujinami will likely start the 2024 season in the minors and look to work his way into the Mets' bullpen.

San Francisco taking a look
PFree Agent  AAA

Fujinami is drawing interest from the Giants, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
The Red Sox and Diamondbacks are a couple other clubs that have been connected to the Japanese right-hander. Fujinami's 45-day window to sign with an MLB team began when he was posted December 1, and while he's been mainly a starter for the Hanshin Tigers, the 28-year-old might profile better as a reliever in the majors.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2023
2016
Fujinami is looking to make the jump to MLB after posting a 3.41 ERA across 10 seasons in Japan. Whether or not he'll successfully do so is an open question. Fujinami was once one of Japan's top prospects, rivaling Shohei Ohtani as an amateur. He has good stuff, including a fastball that can touch triple digits, but he's had his fair share of struggles in recent seasons. From 2017 through 2021, the only time he posted an ERA below 4.00 was when he threw just 4.1 innings in 2019. Control is his primary problem, as his career 10.6 BB% indicates. He managed to cut that figure to 7.5% last season, helping him to a much better 3.38 ERA, but that came in just 16 starts as he also spent time in the minors, as he'd done in each of the previous five seasons. A player who's been unable to lock himself into a permanent role in Japan is unlikely to have all that much appeal on this side of the Pacific, though he was able to secure a one-year deal with the A's in January. Fujinami should open the season in Oakland's rotation, and he should receive a slight boost with about half his starts set to come at the pitcher-friendly Coliseum.
Standing a noodly 6-foot-5, 194 pounds, Fujinami features a fastball that sits at 95 mph and touches 100 on occasion, as well as devastating splitter. He's shown good durability, topping out at 199 innings pitched in 2015, which he paired with a robust 221 strikeouts. On the downside, his control has taken a bit of a step back as his velocity has increased. Hanshin is less likely to post Fujinami prior to him qualifying for free agency, so he is about six years away from appearing on North American soil.
