2017
Motter got into just 17 big-league games last season, eight with Seattle and nine with Minnesota. He did nothing to warrant more playing time, going just 5-for-34. The story wasn't any better in the minors, as he stumbled to a .187/.277/.352 line in 88 games at Double-A and Triple-A with the two organizations. The performance was poor enough to earn him his release in August. The 29-year-old has appeared everywhere except catcher and center field in his three-year major-league career, which helps him in the race for a team's final bench spot, but his .191/.263/.312 career line makes an Opening Day roster spot unlikely.
After appearing in just 34 games for Tampa Bay in 2016, Motter was thrust into an expanded role in Seattle. He secured a spot on the Opening Day roster with a strong spring training performance and his positional versatility earned him a career-high 68 starts, including at least one start at each position aside from pitcher, catcher and center field. Though his ability to fill in all over the field was certainly of value, Motter struggled to make a real impact at the plate. In his 280 plate appearances, the utility man slashed just .198/.257/.326. Motter swiped 12 bags in 13 attempts in the big leagues and posted a wRC+ of 172 in 25 games with Triple-A Tacoma last season, but has yet to translate his hit tool to the majors. The 28-year-old will likely enter the season in a reserve role again and will be hard-pressed to find extensive playing time barring an injury to one of the team's regulars.
Motter's 80-at-bat cup of coffee with the Rays was certainly nothing to write home about, as he managed a .188/.290/.300 line with two homers and nine RBI. Furthermore, after swiping 20-plus bags at four different minor league stops, he disappointingly failed to get on the board in that category at the big-league level. Despite his forgettable major league debut, it's prudent to keep in mind the 27-year-old's previous body of work, which includes 96 extra-base hits in the 2014-15 seasons at the Double-A and Triple-A levels, respectively, including a combined 30 homers over that span. He also drove in 133 runs and stole 41 bases during that period, keeping him on the radar in deeper formats. Having been dealt to the Mariners as part of a five-player deal on Nov. 18, Motter will try to parlay his positional versatility into a spot on Seattle's 25-man roster this spring.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
No action since promotion
SSSt. Louis Cardinals
April 30, 2023
Motter hasn't seen the field since rejoining the Cardinals' 26-man roster Wednesday, per Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat, and he's not in the lineup for Sunday's series finale against the Dodgers.
ANALYSIS
St. Louis has a plethora of outfield options and a versatile starting infield, and Motter is clearly at the end of the bench behind Paul DeJong and Dylan Carlson. Motter has been on the Cardinals' big-league roster for most of the season but has played in just seven games, and his role is unlikely to change while the club remains in good health.
