Stat Review
How does Tim Locastro compare to other hitters?
This section compares his stats with all batting seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 400 plate appearances)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity and Barrels/PA % are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 400 PA) and Hard Hit Rate is benchmarked against last season's data (min 400 PA). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2022
2021
2020
Locastro began 2021 with the Diamondbacks before moving on to the Yankees, and he slashed .180.263/.252 in 64 games between the two clubs. The 29-year-old signed back with New York on a split contract and should provide some outfield depth. Aaron Hicks is poised to start in center field, but his availability is always a question mark given his injury history. Ender Inciarte is also in the mix as a non-roster invitee. Locastro saw his most extensive playing time in 2019 with Arizona and stolen 17 bases while being caught zero time in 250 plate appearances, but he's unlikely to see enough action in 2022 for his baserunning skills to be applicable for fantasy purposes.
Despite posting the best season of his career, Locastro played sparingly as Arizona was more content auditioning future Diamondbacks. He recorded a 135 wRC+, his first time eclipsing the league norm of 100. While the batted-ball numbers were below league average, Locastro hit the ball a little harder than he did the prior two seasons while maintaining elite foot speed. After being hit by a pitch once every 11 plate appearances in 2019, Locastro was only struck one every 20 PA last season, making up for it by walking more. Despite coming up as a middle infielder, Locastro has played exclusively in the outfield in the majors, appearing at all three positions. His speed and defense will assure a roster spot, but Locastro will likely be relegated to a reserve role, at least to begin the 2021 campaign.
Locastro led MLB with a 30.8 ft/sec sprint speed, but he can't steal first. What he can do is get free trips to first base the hard way as he specializes in being hit by pitches. Locastro was hit by pitches 31 times last season between Triple-A and the majors, which is how a guy who hit .250 with a 5.6 BB% ended up with a .357 on-base percentage. He has been hit by pitches 20 or more times six different seasons in his professional career, so it is a skill for him at this point. The problem is, there are not many other skills. Locastro puts bat to ball at a fine clip, but with little authority -- his 25.3 Soft% would have ranked last among qualified hitters. He is an ideal reserve outfielder on a real ball club, making him a fifth outfielder in an NL-only league for a fantasy manager looking for steals, runs and nothing else. The power simply is not there.
