Tyler Black

24-Year-Old DHDH
Milwaukee Brewers AAA
2025 Fantasy Outlook
The 24-year-old is one of Milwaukee's top prospects and received his first taste of the majors in 2024, though he didn't do much in limited action with a .204/.316/.245 slash line and 29.8 percent strikeout rate in 18 contests. Black was plenty productive at Triple-A Nashville, however, and finished with 15 home runs, 20 stolen bases and an .805 OPS in just 103 games. Defensive limitations restrict his path to playing time in the big leagues, especially with Rhys Hoskins and Christian Yelich poised to get a lot of work at first base and designated hitter, respectively. Milwaukee potentially has an infield opening at third base following the departure of Willy Adames (with Joey Ortiz expected to slide to shortstop), but it's unclear if Milwaukee is willing to give Black significant run at the hot corner. Assuming he'll primarily be used at first base and designated hitter, the Brewers would likely need to make a trade or deal with some injuries in order for Black to receive a regular shot at playing time in 2025. Hoskins could also fall into a lesser role as the season unfolds if he's unable to improve upon a career-low .722 OPS. Read Past Outlooks

Moves back to Triple-A
DHMilwaukee Brewers  AAA
August 22, 2024
The Brewers optioned Black to Triple-A Nashville on Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Black will cede his spot on the 26-man active roster to outfielder Blake Perkins (calf), who was reinstated from the 10-day injured list. After getting recalled from Nashville on Aug. 12, Black started at designated hitter in five of the Brewers' ensuing nine games while going 2-for-15 with three walks against five strikeouts. Now that Black is out of the mix, the Brewers will likely rotate a number of players at DH, with Gary Sanchez, Jake Bauers and Perkins all being candidates to see upticks in opportunities.

Stat Review
How does Tyler Black compare to other hitters?
This section compares his stats with all batting seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 400 plate appearances)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity and Barrels/PA % are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 400 PA) and Hard Hit Rate is benchmarked against last season's data (min 400 PA). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.
  • BB/K
    Walk to strikeout ratio
  • BB Rate
The percentage of plate appearances resulting in a walk.
  • K Rate
The percentage of plate appearances resulting in a strikeout.

  • Exit Velocity
The speed of the baseball as it comes off the bat, immediately after a batter makes contact.
  • Hard Hit Rate
A measure of contact quality from Sports Info Solutions. This stat explains what percentage of batted balls were hit hard vs. medium or soft.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2024
2023
Black has been a top-400 prospect since he was drafted with the 33rd overall pick in 2021 and he fully broke out last year across Double-A and Triple-A. The second baseman turned outfielder turned third baseman reached new heights as a stolen-base threat, swiping 55 bases on 67 attempts (82.1% success rate) in 123 games. He also unlocked a new level as a slugger, at least against righties, posting an ISO over .200 and a SLG over .500 at both stops. Scouting reports and hard-hit metrics suggest Black's game power will be capped at around 15-20 homers in the majors, but he has a good enough eye at the plate that he should get the most of his fringe-average raw power. He is a plus runner with good instincts, but dynasty and redraft managers shouldn't expect anything close to the 55 steals he logged last season in the minors. Perhaps he could steal 30 bases if he gets everyday at-bats and meets expectations as an on-base threat (career .415 OBP in the minors). It's going to be tricky for Milwaukee to find a defensive home for Black, as he is a below-average defender everywhere and may just need to be hidden at first base and designated hitter. He could also sit against lefties, against whom his power and plate skills are less impressive. As of November, no third-base eligible Brewer had a higher NFBC ADP than Black, despite the fact he hasn't debuted yet.
After playing just 26 games in 2021, Black took a beating in 2022, as he played only 64 games at High-A due to a fractured scapula and his Arizona Fall League season was cut short due to a broken thumb. Along the way, Black showcased an elite eye at the plate and above-average speed on the bases. The lefty hitter saw the most time at second base and center field last season, and his below-average arm limits his defensive versatility. He hit .280 with an OBP north of .400 and 17 steals on 24 attempts across 81 games at High-A and the AFL, but his line-drive swing produced just five home runs. Black turns 23 in July and will be making his Double-A debut this season, so he needs to either get good enough in the field to play every day as a Kolten Wong caliber hitter who sits against some lefties, or he needs to adjust his launch angle (48.7 GB%) to access 20-homer power.

Could get early call-up in '24
DHMilwaukee Brewers  AAA
October 10, 2023
Brewers general manager Matt Arnold said Tuesday that Black could be considered for an early-season call-up in 2024, Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.
ANALYSIS
Black, the 33rd overall selection in the 2021 MLB First-Year Player Draft, posted a shiny .284/.417/.513 batting line with 18 home runs and 55 stolen bases in 123 games this season between Double-A Biloxi and Triple-A Nashville while making 97 starts at third base and 16 starts at first base. Those two positions represent significant areas of need for Milwaukee, pending any offseason moves, and Black sure looks like an intriguing internal option with considerable multi-category fantasy upside.
