Attempting comeback
Ivey is attempting a return to baseball after retiring in May of 2022, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Ivey was a prospect of note several years ago with the Astros, making one appearance for them back in 2021. However, injuries to his pitching arm and a lack of passion for the game steered him toward retirement. Now 28 and feeling healthy, Ivey is trying a comeback following an impromptu start for a collegiate summer league team convinced him he might be able to pull it off. The Astros retain Ivey's contractual rights and figure to assign him to a lower minor-league affiliate initially as he eases back into things.

Ivey has demonstrated increasing success as he has progressed through three seasons in the minors, culminating in a Double-A stint in 2019 during which he posted a 1.57 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 11.9 K/9 over 46 innings. The right-hander features a low-90s fastball with good spin and a plus curveball that ranks as his best pitch, and he has shown enough promise with his other offerings (a changeup and a slider) to warrant consideration as a starter once he reaches the majors. Ivey has primarily functioned in that role in the minors, though he has yet to be tasked with a starter's workload, which could be an obstacle given his imperfect mechanics. Houston added Ivey to its 40-man roster in November, so they clearly see him as part of their future plans. He'll likely open 2021 at the Triple-A level, but it wouldn't be surprising to see him debut with the big club at some point during the campaign.
