2023 Fantasy Outlook
For the second straight season, the Nationals played Hernandez out of necessity, and for the second straight year, he performed at a league average level. The problem is he's 35-years-old and the club really needs to find someone younger to develop. Perhaps that's why Hernandez was optioned to Triple-A Rochester after the season. There still isn't much in Washington's outfield, so Hernandez's may be required again. He strikes out around the league average, but rarely draws a walk. Hernandez has plus power, but it's capped by a groundball rate north of 50%. If he's forced into regular playing time, Hernandez can masquerade as a back-end mixed league outfielder, but like the Nationals, you play him out of necessity, not because you want to. Outrighted to Triple-A
Hernandez was outrighted to Triple-A Rochester on Tuesday, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports.
ANALYSIS
As a 35-year-old left fielder who has been worth exactly -0.1 fWAR in each of the past three seasons, it's easy to see why Hernandez was cast off the 40-man roster. This greatly diminishes his deep-league value, as the Nationals have one of the shallowest depth charts in the league, so Hernandez's value was solely tied to getting playing time for Washington in the short term.

Recent RotoWire Articles Featuring Yadiel Hernandez See More

Zac Gallen tops this week’s risers and fallers list, as a riser with six consecutive starts in which he's thrown a total of 41.1 shutout innings while allowing just 16 hits.

With all the recent transactions, Dan Marcus reviews some players who are set to take on much larger roles.
2022 Fantasy Outlook
Hernandez made his major-league debut during the shortened 2020 campaign at 32 years hold, and he ended up appearing in 112 games for the Nationals last season. He hit .273/.329/.413 with nine home runs and 32 RBI, which was good for a 98 wRC+. Juan Soto is locked in right field for Washington, but Lane Thomas and Victor Robles don't have firm grips on the other two outfield spots. Hernandez should open the campaign as the No. 4 outfielder, but he could see at least semi-regular playing time given the low floor and inconsistency of the group behind Soto, though it may not end up making him a factor for fantasy purposes.
