2024 Fantasy Outlook
Carter was selected with the No. 13 overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft by Sacramento. Carter is a high-energy, high-motor guard who's an excellent defender but is a bit of a 'tweener due to his offensive game. He's capable of creating his own shot, hitting 37.7 percent of his attempts from beyond the arc, but it's unclear if his decision-making will be good enough for him to play point guard. While he's only 6-foot-2, the reigning Big East Player of the Year out of Providence has a massive wingspan and logged 8.7 rebounds and 1.8 steals per game in college. However, he'll have to navigate through plenty of traffic in a busy Kings backcourt that features De'Aaron Fox, Malik Monk, Kevin Huerter and Keon Ellis. Adding to that, he isn't starting the season healthy. Carter sustained a left shoulder injury during a pre-draft workout, and the Kings were aware of the issue when selecting him. Sacramento announced a sixth-month timeline from his July surgery, so the rookie may not debut until after the New Year. As a result, it's likely not worth drafting him in fantasy for Year 1. Personal Bio/PreCareer Summary

Carter spent his freshman year at South Carolina where he was limited to just seven starts across 30 appearances in the SEC, averaging 9.0 points, 3.8 rebounds and 1.8 assists across 18.7 minutes per game. The Miami, FL native wanted a more significant role elsewhere and transferred to Providence before his sophomore year. Carter started in 33 appearances for the Friars across his two seasons with the program. He had his best year as a junior in 2023-24, averaging 19.7 points, 8.7 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 1.8 steals across 35.3 minutes per game - all career-high figures (except the steals). He also shot 47.3% from the field and 37.7% from beyond the arc in his junior season. Carter's impressive year helped him earn the 2023-24 Big East Player of the Year. He was also named in the 2023-24 All-Big East First Team and the 2023-24 All-Big East Tournament, leading the Big East in points per game in 2023-24. Known for his defensive ability, Carter experienced an offensive breakout in 2023-24 that translated into an uptick in his Draft stock, and over the last 12 months has become widely considered as one of the best two-way guards in the nation over. He's a dangerous player in ball-screen and spot-up situations, meaning he can play on and off the ball. However, his decision making will ultimately determine whether he makes a career as a point guard or shooting guard. His lateral quickness is an asset on both ends of the court, allowing him to get off screens with relative ease while also being helpful to defend in the perimeter. Even though his scoring ability is proven at the NBA level, he lacks a consistent mid-range game. Most of his offensive arsenal lies between attacking the rim and shooting threes. He looks the part of a two-way asset and a three-and-D player, with the potential to become even more if his offensive game continues to develop as it has over the last two years. Given his shooting numbers, explosiveness on defense and ability to spark the team out of nowhere, he has drawn comparisons to Derrick White. It wouldn't be surprising if his career follows a similar trajectory, starting as a defensive-minded guard and working his way to becoming an elite two-way player who can start for almost any team in the league. Carter has the advantage of his size, allowing him to play as a combo guard efficiently in both roles.

November 11, 2024
Carter (shoulder) was cleared to participate in unrestricted shooting drills Monday, Matt George of ABC 10 Sacramento reports.
ANALYSIS
Carter underwent a procedure in mid-July to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder, which he suffered during a pre-draft workout. He has progressed through the injury enough to work on shooting again, and his injury will be re-evaluated in January.

Might miss start of season
GSacramento Kings
July 7, 2024
Carter could miss the start of the 2024-25 season after scheduling a left shoulder surgery for mid-July, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic.
ANALYSIS
The former Providence standout was already ruled out for the California Classic and the Las Vegas Summer League due to the shoulder problem, but the Kings have decided surgery is the best alternative for a full recovery. An exact recovery timeline is not yet known, although the availability of the 6-foot-2 point guard for the beginning of the 2024-25 campaign is said to be in question.
