It was easy to lose track of Vassell refining his game last year due to the gravitational field of Victor Wembanyama. But the 24-year-old wing is a key cog in the machine the Spurs are constructing. Vassell saw a career-high 33.1 minutes and reached new highs in points (19.5) and assists (4.1) per game, as well as field-goal percentage (47.2%). He's quietly one of the league's more prolific mid-range shooters, with 38 percent of his attempts coming between four feet and the three-point line. Most of his strides in efficiency came at the rim and floater range, opened up by Wembanyama's presence and passing ability. Vassell reached high marks in rim efficiency (71%) and short mid-range efficiency (51%) last year. With the No. 4 pick in this summer's draft, the Spurs selected Stephon Castle, who is essentially the same size as Vassell. However, he doesn't project to threaten Vassell's minutes due to Vassell's established presence and great three-point shooting. As it stands, it looks like Vassell should again be San Antonio's second scoring option behind Wembanyama, though he might be asked to handle the ball slightly less with Chris Paul in town. With his age and role, Vassell's fantasy value has the potential to rise for a fourth year in a row. Read Past Outlooks

Personal Bio/PreCareer Summary
Vassell was born Aug. 23, 2000 and grew up in Suwanee, Georgia. He is the son of Cynthia and Andrew Cassell. His father, Andrew, played college ball at Stony Brook. Vassell has an older brother and an older sister. He began playing basketball at age six, playing on a 7-8-year-old team. The shooting guard attended Peachtree Ridge High School, where after his senior season he was named regional Player of the Year by the Gwinnett Daily Post. For college, Vassell attended Florida State and majored in Sport Management. With the Seminoles, he was voted Second-team All-ACC in 2020 after his sophomore season. He then declared himself eligible for the 2020 NBA Draft. Fans can follow the high scoring wing on Twitter @Yvngdevo and on Instagram @Devin_Vassell. Vassell made significant strides in his game between his freshman and sophomore seasons at Florida State, propelling him to the first round of the 2020 NBA Draft. As a freshman, the 6-6 wing was a role player, averaging 4.5 points in 10.7 minutes across 33 contests. Everything ramped up in 2019-20, however, as Vassell became a full-time starter and increased his playing time to 28.8 MPG. He used that opportunity to produce 12.7 points, 5.1 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.4 steals. Vassell's best showing of the year came in a Jan. 18 contest against the Hurricanes, where he put up 23 points, 11 rebounds and five assists. Three games later against Virginia Tech, he put up a collegiate career high with 27 points on 8-of-10 shooting. While the stats weren't necessarily eye-popping, Vassell's stock continued to rise due to his efficiency. He finished sixth in the ACC in PER, and was first in the conference in turnover percentage. The Seminoles finished that season with a 26-5 record and were in line for a No. 2 seed in the NCAAA tournament, though it was ultimately canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

November 20, 2024
Vassell (knee) has been ruled out for Thursday's game against Utah.
ANALYSIS Vassell's next opportunity to take the court comes Saturday versus Golden State as he continues battling left knee soreness. The 24-year-old has dealt with left knee injuries in the past, so his progression should be closely monitored.

2020
The Spurs had one of the worst rosters in the NBA last year, allowing Vassell to become one of the focal points of their offense. Vassell lapped his career numbers, averaging 18.3 points, 3.9 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 1.1 steals on 43.9 percent shooting. He also shot 38.7 percent from three-point range and 78.0 percent from the free-throw line. What's most encouraging is that he was asked to be San Antonio's primary scorer at times last year. Keldon Johnson was the only player he was battling for shots, but that's not going to be the case this year. Victor Wembanyama was taken with the top pick in the draft, and he has immediate All-Star upside. Look for San Antonio to feed him night after night, likely taking away shots and touches from Vassell. It's not a given that Vassell will duplicate what he did last season with those additions, but we can't overlook a possible jump from a 22-year-old, either. He's projected to be a popular pick in the middle rounds.
The No. 11 pick from 2020 made strides as a sophomore last season. With DeMar DeRozan, LaMarcus Aldridge and Rudy Gay out of the picture, Vassell stepped into more minutes (17.0 MPG to 27.3 MPG) and more usage (14.3% to 18.9%). He also started 32 of his 71 appearances. Overall, the Florida State product averaged 12.3 points on 43/36/84 shooting, 4.3 rebounds, 1.9 assists and 1.1 steals. While those numbers don't jump off the page, Vassell increased his shooting efficiency and assist percentage while decreasing his turnover percentage - an impressive feat as a young player taking on more usage. However, he still relied on others to create for him, with 80 percent of his baskets going assisted - in the 37th percentile for wing players. He also settles for jumpers often, with just 17 percent of his shots coming at the rim. And while he leans on long twos more often than is ideal, he shot 43 percent from that range, which is solid. Right now, he's flashed upside as a three-and-D wing, but it's possible coach Gregg Popovich will look to get Vassell more involved this season. San Antonio is in one of the deepest rebuilds in the NBA, and Vassell is one of the best players on the roster after Dejounte Murray was traded away to Atlanta over the summer. Vassell ranked 121st in per-game production last season, so fantasy managers will likely need to cough up a top-100 pick to get the third-year wing.
The 11th overall pick in the 2020 Draft, Vassell had an up-and-down rookie campaign with the Spurs. Overall, he appeared in 62 games (seven starts) and averaged 5.5 points and 2.8 rebounds. He's primarily a shooter, with 52 percent of his shots coming from three and just 16 percent of his looks coming at the rim. However, he didn't exactly excel from an efficiency standpoint, as he shot just 40.6 percent from the field and 34.7 percent from distance. He showed some upside on defense, averaging a combined 2.1 steals-plus-blocks per 36 minutes, but those aren't gaudy numbers. Vassell should have more opportunities this season with the Spurs appearing to be in a rebuild. While Doug McDermott will likely start at small forward, Vassell figures to be the primary backup, and he could see some action at shooting guard behind Derrick White. However, Vassell can probably be avoided in most drafts since it's possible, if not likely, that he sees minutes in the low-20s.
The Florida State product was a relatively late-riser up draft boards after a breakout sophomore season, going No. 11 to the Spurs. Vassell averaged 12.7 points per game, adding 5.1 rebounds, 1.6 assists, 1.4 steals and 1.0 steals in 28.8 minutes for the Seminoles. He shot better than 41 percent from three in two collegiate seasons, but he's not a good free-throw shooter, so he'll face some questions about whether his jump shot will translate. In San Antonio, Vassell will likely slide in as a bench piece, though it remains to be seen if the Spurs will look to move players like DeMar DeRozan and LaMarcus Aldridge, which could trigger a more youth-oriented rotation.

Targeting November return
FSan Antonio Spurs
October 23, 2024
The Spurs are hopeful Vassell, who's dealing with a foot injury, can return to the court at some point during early November, according to Tom Orsborn of The San Antonio Express-News.
ANALYSIS Vassell is scheduled to be reevaluated Nov. 1, and the Spurs will take a cautious approach with the guard, who is a big part of the team's long-term picture. Vassell still hasn't been cleared to take contact, which is far from encouraging, but the team remains hopeful that he'll be ready to return from his injury at some point in early November.
