Cut by Charlotte
The Hornets waived Sumner on Tuesday, Shams Charania of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Sumner will cede his spot on the Hornets' 15-man roster to point guard Ish Smith, who agreed to a one-year deal with the organization. With Frank Ntilikina suffering a fractured left tibia that will keep him sidelined for around one month, adding a traditional backup point guard in Smith was a need for Charlotte rather than keeping Sumner on hand as wing depth.

Sumner continued to hold a depth role with the Pacers last season, though he was able to have a nice string of performances to end the season while Indiana dealt with injuries. During his final 24 appearances (19 starts), he averaged 10.7 points, 2.3 rebounds and 1.5 assists in 21.6 minutes. However, Sumner suffered a torn Achilles during an offseason workout and is expected to miss most, if not all, of the upcoming season.

Latest Fantasy Rumors

Decent play for Brooklyn
Despite being name-dropped in Kevin Durant's interview with Chris Haynes of Bleacher Report, Sumner has graded as a positive contributor to the Nets through 16 appearances.
ANALYSIS
Sumner is averaging 7.8 points, 1.6 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.2 steals/blocks in 16.2 minutes per game. Durant's full quote read, "look at our starting lineup. Edmond Sumner, Royce O'Neale, Joe Harris, [Nic] Claxton and me. It's not disrespect, but what are you expecting from that group?" While not flashy, Sumner's usage has yielded a solid plus-2.0 point differential, fueled by a plus-4.2 differential on defense.
