2025 Fantasy Outlook
Alvarado, much like the Pelicans themselves, enters the 2025-26 season as a true wild card. His role grew last year, making 23 starts in 56 regular-season games and averaging 10.3 points, 4.6 assists, 2.4 rebounds and 1.3 steals in 24.4 minutes per contest while shooting 39.2 percent from the field and 35.9 percent from deep. He cracked double figures in scoring for the first time in his career, but his efficiency slipped below 40 percent from the floor for the first time as well. What has remained steady for New Orleans is Alvarado's defensive tenacity -- the 27-year-old has posted at least a steal per game in every season since debuting in 2021-22. Predicting the scrappy guard's minutes is tricky, given the Pelicans' crowded perimeter, which now includes Jeremiah Fears and Jordan Poole, added via the 2025 NBA Draft and trade market, respectively. The improved health of Herbert Jones and the continued growth of Jordan Hawkins will also influence his role. However, Dejounte Murray won't return until later in the season as he recovers from a torn right Achilles tendon suffered in January 2025. Alvarado's defensive intensity will earn him playing time, but a meaningful jump in production or minutes is far from guaranteed. Read Past Outlooks
Takes on 13-minute role in return
Alvarado (oblique) tallied six points (2-5 FG, 2-5 3Pt), five rebounds and one assist across 13 minutes Sunday in the Pelicans' 104-95 win over the Spurs.
ANALYSIS
Following a nine-game absence due to an oblique strain, Alvarado made his return to action Sunday and reclaimed a spot on the Pelicans' second unit. When healthy, Alvarado has mostly served as the top backup at point guard to Jeremiah Fears, but the two played alongside one another off the bench while interim head coach James Borrego dropped Jordan Poole from the rotation and ran out a starting five lacking a true point guard. Borrego could shake up the lineup at some point, but Alvarado seems likely to continue operating off the bench and could struggle to regain a consistent 20-plus-minute role while the Pelicans have all their key contributors available, save for Dejounte Murray (Achilles).

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2024
2023
2022
Alvarado was limited to just 56 appearances during the 2023-24 season, and while he posted decent numbers when factoring in that he averaged a mere 18.4 minutes per contest, his situation for 2024-25 is even more complicated. The Pelicans acquired Dejounte Murray in the offseason and still have CJ McCollum on the roster, meaning Alvarado's role will be limited to being a bench guard who's not expected to handle a ton of playmaking duties unless the two starting guards are sitting for prolonged stretches. Alvarado averaged 7.1 points, 2.3 rebounds, 2.1 assists, 1.1 steals and 1.4 three-pointers in 18.4 minutes per game in 2023-24, and given the recent roster moves, it's hard to imagine him seeing a more significant role off the bench. Thus, fantasy managers would be wise to leave Alvarado on waivers. However, he can be valuable as a streaming option in category-based leagues due to his steals and three-point shooting.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Target for Knicks?
The Knicks could make a move for Alvarado, James L. Edwards III of The Athletic speculates.
ANALYSIS
Edwards ponders whether the Knicks should make a trade to improve their defense before the Feb. 5 deadline, and adding Alvarado to the roster would certainly accomplish that. There are no talks between the Knicks and Pelicans for the veteran guard, though, so it's unclear if a deal will actually happen in the coming weeks. Alvarado is likely to be one of the most sought-after players via trade if the Pelicans make him available, though.
