Filipowski was drafted by the Jazz with the No. 32 overall pick in the second round of the 2024 NBA Draft. Filipowski spent two years at Duke before entering the NBA Draft. As a sophomore in 2023-24, he averaged 16.4 points, 8.3 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 1.5 blocks and 1.1 steals in 36 games. At 7-foot, Filipowski also has the ability to stretch the floor, as he converted 34.8 percent of his 3.1 three-point attempts per contest last year. In eight Summer League appearances, the rookie averaged 11.0 points and 1.0 threes on 41/27/70 shooting, 6.0 rebounds, 1.9 assists and 1.0 steals in 22.2 minutes. While the 20-year-old big man will have to earn his playing time early on, a future frontcourt with Lauri Markkanen, Taylor Hendricks and Filipowski could offer a stout interior defense while maintaining ideal spacing on the offensive end. Playing time may not be easy to come by right away, as Filipowksi will also have to fight for minutes with John Collins and Walker Kessler, not to mention Brice Sensabaugh and Drew Eubanks. Personal Bio/PreCareer Summary
Filipowski spent the two years of his college career at Duke, starting each of his 72 appearances for the Blue Devils. He thrived as a freshman, averaging 15.1 points, 9.0 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.3 steals per game while shooting over 50 percent from the field. His progress wasn't linear, but he experienced an uptick in several categories as a sophomore, posting career-high marks in points (16.4), assists (2.8) and blocks (1.5) per game, seeing an improvement in his shooting (55.9 percent from the field) while cutting down on turnovers (2.1 per game compared to 2.5 as a freshman). Filipowski was named to the 2022-23 All-ACC Second Team and the 2023-24 All-ACC First Team. He was also named the 2023 ACC Tournament MVP while being part of the 2023-24 Consensus All-American Second Team. A seven-footer who can play both power forward and center, Filipowski seems like one of the safest picks in the 2024 NBA Draft among players widely projected to be in the lottery due to his high floor and elite basketball instincts. He has an excellent assist rate, has proven to be a solid shooter with a range that stretches beyond the three-point line and owns a decent offensive game near the rim, where his efficiency plays at his best. There are question marks as to how he'd handle the league's physicality, but he seems to have a strong enough frame since he's a 248-pound seven-footer. He's not the most athletic big man out there, but he compensates for the lack of athleticism with above-average passing and an ability to stretch the floor. Filipowski needs to improve defensively, particularly as a rim protector, and he's an absolute liability from the free-throw line, but overall, the positives outweigh the negatives when determining his potential as a prospect. Given his above-average ballhandling and passing skills for a big man, he could be compared to Kelly Olynyk and Santi Aldama among current NBA players. His game still needs to be worked on, but he seems good enough to be part of an NBA rotation in his rookie year. If he improves his shot creation, Filipowski could see an uptick in his potential, as he's drawn comparisons to Lauri Markkanen as a best-case scenario. That would be a borderline All-Star player at his best. Even if he doesn't reach that ceiling, Filipowski should be good enough to have a lengthy career in the NBA.
ANALYSIS Filipowski will be sidelined for a sixth straight game due to a left leg injury, and his next chance to play will be against Portland on Friday. Drew Eubanks will continue to see increased playing time off the Jazz's bench due to Filipowski's injury.

Stepping up in Utah
CUtah Jazz
November 16, 2024
Filipowski is averaging 12.8 points, 6.2 rebounds and 2.6 assists on 61.9 percent shooting across five contests in which he has received at least 20 minutes of action this season.
ANALYSIS Filipowski has also connected on eight of 16 three-point attempts over that span. The 6-foot-11 big has still logged a limited sample, but he ranks in the 93rd percentile for defensive rebounding rate, which was a staple of his college game. It will be interesting to monitor the stability of Filipowski's efficiency, as well as his defensive role, but there could be traces of a quality rotation player forming.
