Now in his third season, Garza will return to Minnesota on a two-way deal once again. He was used sparingly during the 2022-23 campaign, playing 8.7 minutes per night across 28 games. He averaged 6.5 points and 2.3 rebounds. Although the Timberwolves obviously see enough to warrant another contract, he is unlikely to feature in the rotation on a nightly basis. Personal Bio/PreCareer Summary

Luka Garza was born in Washington D.C. in December of 1998. He has one sister and is the son of Frank and Sejla Garza. Frank played basketball at the University of Idaho and Sejla played professionally in Europe. Garza's uncle, Teoman Alibegovic, is the all-time leading scorer for the national basketball team of Slovenia. Garza grew up in the Virginia suburbs of D.C. and was 6-foot-7 as a high school freshman at Maret School. As a senior at Maret in 2016-17, Garza earned D.C. Gatorade Player of the Year honors and graduated as the school's all-time leading scorer. The four-star recruit decided to play college ball at the University of Iowa. Garza started 26 of 33 games for Iowa as a freshman (2017-18) and scored 12.1 points per game. He had a similar season as a sophomore, but his stats took off as a junior. In his third season at Iowa, Garza generated 23.9 points, 9.8 rebounds and 1.8 blocks per game. That production led to the big center being named a Naismith Player of the Year Trophy Finalist, Big Ten Men's Basketball Player of the Year and a consensus first-team All American. As a senior, Garza boosted his scoring to 24.1 points a game. After a win over Wisconsin, Iowa announced they were retiring Garza's number 55. The center ended his senior season as Iowa's all-time scoring leader, the Consensus National Player of the Year and a consensus unanimous first-team All-American. Garza was selected by the Detroit Pistons with the 52nd overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft.

The Timberwolves converted Garza's two-way deal to a standard NBA contract Thursday, Shams Charania of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
As a two-way player, Garza had been splitting time between the NBA and G League level season, making 21 appearances for Minnesota and 14 for the Iowa Wolves. He's seen a slight uptick in opportunities with the Timberwolves since Karl-Anthony Towns underwent surgery just over a month ago to address a torn meniscus, but Garza is still averaging a modest 7.9 points and 2.1 rebounds in 9.7 minutes over his last seven outings. By moving him off his two-way deal to a standard NBA contract, Garza will now be eligible to play in the postseason, though the Timberwolves could have Towns available by that point.

Garza is the reigning MVP of the event after posting 23 points, eight rebounds and three assists in the inaugural matchup last year when he helped fuel a 178-162 victory. Garza is currently on a two-way contract with Minnesota.

2021 Fantasy Outlook
After being selected 52nd overall by the Pistons in the 2021 Draft, Garza had a nice Summer League. In 21.2 minutes, he averaged 15.0 points on 52/40/79 shooting, 9.6 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.0 blocks. That was good enough to earn him a two-way contract, so the center will spend most of the upcoming season in the G League. It won't be surprising if Garza is excellent in the G League, as he's one of the most decorated college players of all time. Given the situation, Garza may be the best bet of all two-way players to be converted to a standard deal at some point in the season. With the Pistons in a clear rebuild, getting NBA minutes for Garza could end up being a priority down the stretch. However, the situation isn't exactly actionable in redraft leagues, and he's almost exclusively a deep dynasty league target as it stands.
