Grimes is expected to have a rotation role with the Pistons as soon as he recovers from a nagging knee sprain that will prevent him from making his Detroit debut until after the All-Star break, Mike Curtis of the Detroit News reports.
ANALYSIS
Head coach Monty Williams praised what Grimes might bring to the table once he's available. "I've always felt like he's one of those guys who's trying to find that consistent path, but he has a skill set and body type that fits the way we want to play," Williams said. "He can shoot the ball. He's got a big body, so defensively, he can switch and guard the way that we like to. I think there's a lot more in his game. We want to try to figure that out." Grimes was a regular presence off the bench for the Knicks before being shipped to Detroit, and he's expected to have that same role with the Pistons. His floor spacing and defensive intensity will be useful off the bench for Detroit, while Cade Cunningham and Jaden Ivey remain the starting backcourt duo. Grimes averaged 7.3 points, 2.0 rebounds and 1.2 assists per game with New York before the trade.

Despite having a sporadic role during his rookie season, there has been an element of hype surrounding Grimes heading into 2022-23. While a trade could have opened up more minutes, he should still feature heavily in the rotation despite the competition for minutes. Exactly Grimes will claim remains to be seen, making him more of a late-round flier at the moment. However, if he can expand his workload, he could be a sneaky source of points, threes and steals.
