Personal Bio/PreCareer Summary

Roderick "R.J." Hampton was born on Feb. 7, 2001 in Dallas, Texas. He is the son of Markita and Rod Hampton and has one younger brother, Ryan. His father Rod played college ball for SJMU. Hampton first played basketball at age three. Hampton's top five movies are Talladega Nights, The Silence of the Lambs, The Lion King, Norbit and Rush Hour. Hampton's favorite basketball player is the late Kobe Bryant. In high school, Hampton played basketball for Little Elm in Little Elm, Texas. He was a decorated high school player, a five-star recruit and was ranked among the top six players in the 2019 high school class. However, Hampton opted to play professionally overseas after high school in the National Basketball League. With the New Zealand Breakers, the 6-foot-5 wing averaged 8.8 points, 3.8 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.1 steals in 20.6 minutes per contest and started in 12 of 15 appearances. Following that season, Hampton declared for the 2020 NBA Draft. Hampton opted to play professionally overseas for one season after high school, signing with the New Zealand Breakers of the Australian NBL. He made his debut Sep. 20, 2019 in a win over Melbourne, posting 11 points, four assists, three rebounds and one steal in 21 minutes. He had a breakout performance in his next appearance, managing a season-high 20 points, five rebounds, a season-high three steals, a season-high two blocks and two assists in 32 minutes against South East Melbourne. His other season highs were set at eight rebounds and five assists. Overall, Hampton averaged 10.0 points, 3.9 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.2 steals in 21.3 minutes, starting 14 of 17 appearances.

Hampton was waived by Detroit on Saturday, Shams Charania of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Hampton spent the closing 22 games of last season with the Pistons after being waived by the Magic in mid-February. During his time in Detroit, Hampton averaged 7.3 points and 2.3 rebounds across 18.5 minutes per game. Since being drafted No. 24 overall in the 2020 NBA Draft, Hampton has struggled to make an impact in the league, with his best season coming in 2021-22, when he secured 7.6 points, 3.0 rebounds and 2.5 assists across 21.8 minutes per game with Orlando. Though it's unlikely we see Hampton return to fantasy relevance anytime soon, it's expected that there will be an NBA team willing to take a chance on the 21-year-old's upside.

February 22, 2023
Hampton is expected to sign with the Pistons after he clears waivers Thursday, Keith Langlois of the Pistons' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Selected late in the first round of the 2020 NBA Draft by the Nuggets, Hampton was dealt to the Magic in his rookie season but didn't find much success in Orlando. Having just turned 22 in early February, he'll look to carve out a role in the Detroit backcourt down the stretch.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2022
2021
2020
Despite an element of upside, especially earlier in his career, Hampton hasn't carved out a consistent role for the Magic. He finished the 2021-22 season barely inside the top 400, thanks to poor efficiency from both the floor and the charity stripe. Even though Hampton is only 21, there's little to get excited about with the Magic building for the future. Barring a standout performance during training camp, Hampton even stands a chance to fall out of the rotation. Hampton shouldn't factor into most fantasy formats in 2022-23.
In the 2020-21 campaign, Hampton appeared in 51 games for the Nuggets and Magic. After playing just 9.3 minutes per game for the Nuggets, the rookie was traded to the Magic in the Aaron Gordon deal. He was able to gain a much greater role with the Magic and finished his season strong, averaging 11.2 points, 5.0 rebounds and 2.8 assists in 25.3 minutes per game after being traded. Hampton will have to compete for minutes with young guards Cole Anthony, Markelle Fultz and fifth overall pick Jalen Suggs. Therefore, the 20-year-old will likely take a step back in playing time and production from the second half of last season. Hampton is doubtful to be relevant in any fantasy aspects.
At 6-foot-5, Hampton is usually the fastest player on the court. The guard creates easy buckets in transition and off turnovers while possessing the ability to capitalize on defenses that haven't yet gotten set. Denver, however, was one of the slowest paced offenses in the league last season, so this isn't necessarily the perfect fit. That said, Hampton has a fine mid-range game and will likely battle for minutes with new teammates Will Barton and Gary Harris.
