Personal Bio/PreCareer Summary

Skylar Mays was born on September 5, 1997 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He grew up in Baton Rouge and attended Louisiana State University Laboratory School, where he played varsity basketball as an eighth-grader. Mays was a first team All-State selection as a sophomore and a junior, leading "U-High" to back-to-back state titles. For his senior season, Mays transferred to Findlay Prep in Henderson, Nevada, where he posted 10.9 points, 5.3 assists, 3.0 rebounds and 2.7 steals as a senior. Mays originally committed to LSU during his sophomore year of high school, but he re-opened his recruitment before his senior year. Ultimately, Mays opted to honor his commitment to LSU, picking the Tigers over offers from Baylor, UNLV, Oklahoma State, Memphis, Cal and Stanford. As a freshman at LSU, Mays began the season coming off the bench but quickly assumed the starting point guard role. He went on to start 25 of 31 appearances, averaging 8.3 points, 2.2 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 1.3 steals per contest. In his sophomore season, Mays posted 11.3 points, 4.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.6 steals per game. He was named a Second Team Academic All-American. During his junior season, Mays made the All-SEC Second Team and was named the SEC Scholar Athlete of the Year. He was also named a First Team Academic All-American. Following his junior season, Mays declared for the NBA Draft but ultimately opted to return to Baton Rouge. As a senior, Mays earned First Team All-SEC honors behind 16.7 points and 5.0 rebounds per game. He was once again a First Team Academic All-American, while also earning the prestigious Academic All-American of the Year award by the College Sports Information Directors of America. Mays majored in pre-med/kinesiology at LSU.

GPortland Trail Blazers
April 10, 2023
Mays is averaging 15.3 points, 8.3 assists, 3.2 rebounds and 1.0 steals in 31.5 minutes per contest across six games with Portland.
ANALYSIS
Mays' sample size is small, but the 6-foot-4, 25-year-old point guard has flashed serious talent. Portland's bench mob has yielded interesting results of late, with success stories like Drew Eubanks and Trendon Watford coming to fantasy relevance. However, cases such as Brandon Williams and Keon Johnson serve as reference points for contextualizing this garbage-time stretch.
