Personal Bio/PreCareer Summary

Theo Maledon was born June 12, 2001 in Rouen, a city on the River Seine in northern France. Both of his parents, Sylvie and Claude, played organized basketball in France. And his sister, Lena, played college basketball in the United States for Ranger College and Southern Arkansas. As a youth, Theo began playing basketball with his local club Mesnil-Esnard in Seine-Maritime and then SPO Rouen. As a 14-year-old, Maledon earned a scholarship to join the National Institute of Sport, Expertise, and Performance (INSEP), a sports institute in Paris. He played two seasons for INSEP's NM1 and U-18 teams. In April of 2017, Maledon played and scored 15 points in the Jordan Brand Classic Global Showcase at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. The young point guard signed his first professional contract in August, 2018 with ASVEL, after playing for their junior team the prior season. Maledon has played for the U-16, U-17 and Senior French national teams. Prior to playing in the NBA, Theo Maledon played professionally in France. On June 16, 2017, the scrappy point guard joined the junior team of LNB Pro A club ASVEL which played in the LNB Espoirs, the French U21 league. The team is located in Villeurbanne, a suburb of Lyon, France. Maledon scored 10 points and dished five assists in his debut for the U-21 ASVEL squad. He made his Pro A debut on September 24, 2017 at age 16, making him the second youngest debutant in team history. In August of 2018, Maledon signed his first professional contract via a three-year agreement with ASVEL. In French Pro A and EuroCup play, Maledon posted 6.8 points, 2.1 rebounds and 2.0 assists over 17 minutes per game as a 17-year-old during the 2018-19 season. Maledon returned to ASVEL and made his EuroLeague debut. In his second EuroLeague game, Maledon suffered a shoulder injury that forced him to miss over a month of court action. He returned to EuroLeague play in January. Over 22 EuroLeague games, Maledon delivered 7.4 points, 3.1 assists and 0.8 three-pointers in 17.7 minutes per game before the season was cut short due to COVID-19 concerns. After the season, Maledon declared himself eligible for the 2020 NBA Draft.

Finishes season strong
GCharlotte Hornets
April 9, 2023
Maledon totaled 18 points (7-13 FG, 0-2 3Pt, 4-4 FT), eight rebounds, six assists and one steal in 42 minutes during Sunday's 106-95 win over the Cavaliers.
ANALYSIS
Maledon filled up the box score, as he tied for the team high in assists and posted the second-most rebounds Sunday. Maledon was a top-100 fantasy player in nine-category leagues over the last two weeks of the season. He started the final six games of the year and averaged 14.8 points, 9.5 assists and 5.2 rebounds. Maledon did drop below 30 percent from three for the season, limiting his value. However, if Maledon can find consistent minutes, he has shown he can produce in multiple categories.

Becomes RFA after qualifying offer
GCharlotte Hornets
June 28, 2023
Maledon is among the players that received a qualifying offer from the Hornets on Wednesday and is now set to approach free agency as a restricted free agent.
ANALYSIS
The Frenchman appeared in 44 games for Charlotte after signing a two-way contract shortly before the start of last season, and due to his contract status, his qualifying offer is a minimal $1.8 million. Maledon would be a serviceable depth piece on a rebuilding team, so it makes sense if he stays with the Hornets.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2022
2021
2020
Maledon took a step back during the 2021-22 season, and given the Thunder continue to piece together young assets, he could find himself on the chopping block this season. With that said, he has flashed a small amount of upside in the past, highlighted by his stretch of scoring at least 20 points in four of the final six matchups to close out 2021-22. At this point, his best shot at fantasy value would appear to be a change of location. However, it is hard to see anyone handing Maledon the keys, so he is likelier to remain a non-factor in the short term.
Expectations for Maledon were low given his status as an early second-round draft pick last season. However, he was able to put together a decent campaign given where he was selected and his age (19 years and 197 days old when making his NBA debut). Unsurprisingly, he started off slow, but he had a breakout performance Jan. 29, posting 24 points on 8-for-9 shooting from the field, 6-for-6 from three and 2-for-2 from the free-throw line, three assists, three rebounds and one steal in 34 minutes. That game seemed to give him more confidence, and his general level of play increased from there on out. From that game on, he averaged 11.5 points, 3.8 assists, 3.5 rebounds and 1.0 steals in 29.8 minutes while starting in all but one appearance. His efficiency certainly leaves something to be desired at just 37/34/77 shooting, but Maledon was often asked to do a lot for a team that had few other offensive options. Despite the missed shots, Maledon was still able to rank 177th in total production due to his good health. Heading into 2021-22, his role may be reduced as both Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Lu Dort are expected to start the season healthy and start in the backcourt. Plus, rookie Josh Giddey will presumably be given plenty of touches for developmental purposes. Fantasy managers holding onto Maledon in dynasty shouldn't panic if he doesn't produce better box score stats this season. The main thing to look for will be efficiency improvement.
A second-round pick in the 2020 draft, Maledon enters the NBA as a 19-year-old point guard with great size (6-5, 198) for the position. This may be more of a developmental year for the Frenchman, but Maledon lands in a great fantasy situation in Oklahoma City. With the Thunder embracing a rebuild, Maledon will likely see more opportunity as a rookie than he would have with almost any other franchise. He projects to open the season as the third, or possibly fourth, point guard, but as the season wears on, the Thunder's coaching staff may look to a more youth-focused rotation. Maledon should not be drafted in the vast majority of leagues, but he's worth a flier in dynasty formats.
