Is sports betting legal in Florida?

Fact Checked By: Josh Collacchi

No. Sports betting is not legal in Florida, though that could change at some point .

The most recent sports betting bill was introduced in November 2019, which would authorize retail sportsbooks run by the state lottery and online betting offered by private operators. Unfortunately, that bill still has a long way to go and there's a chance it may not be addressed in 2020 because of the Coronavirus pandemic.

Florida has numerous hoops to get through from lawmakers, tribal casinos and even the Disney company all in the mix, which keeps extending the date of possible sports betting legalization. Until sports betting is discussed in a legislation session, it will be hard to project when legalization will be possible.

Like most states, Daily Fantasy Sports and horse racing betting are allowed in Florida. Unlike most states, it's also legal to bet on jai alai, as well as on cruise ships that sail into international waters.

There is no formal legislation on fantasy sports, but most sites like DraftKings and FanDuel continue to operate in the state. Multiple attempts have been made to legalize them, but similar to sports betting, there are too many hoops to get through as the state and tribal casinos can rarely agree on an issue.
