Drafting at the FSTA Conference

I participated in a 12-team live draft at the FSTA conference in Chicago on Wednesday night. This league is a PPR league, with 1 point per WR/TE reception, .5 per RB reception. QB's are significantly devalued in this league - 3 pts /pass TD, 1 pt/30 passing yards, -1 point for each interception thrown.

I drew the 12th spot in the draft, which I was pretty happy with. With this format, going WR/WR on the wheel makes sense. The draft didn't unfold perfectly in the first round - Larry Fitzgerald, Andre Johnson and Randy Moss all went before me. Still, I went WR/WR anyhow, and I'm happy with the overall results.

1. Calvin Johnson
2. Steve Smith
3. Ryan Grant
4. Dwayne Bowe
5. Chris Wells
6. Larry Johnson
7. Donald Brown
8. Shonn Greene
9. Carson Palmer
10. Jay Cutler
11. Fred Jackson
12. Laurence Maroney
13. Tony Scheffler
14. Garrett Hartley
15. Arizona defense

Overall thoughts: Yes, I'm vulnerable to a WR injury. But I suspect by the time we go through training camp and the preseason, I'll have at least one injury among my running backs to create the drop for a receiver pickup. I went for quantity at RB to make up for the lack of an early back. I'm plenty happy with my two QB's, given that I played the waiting game there - though I just barely missed out on my top two targets for the round - Matt Schaub and Matt Ryan. Had I done it all over, I might have taken a TE in the 7-8 swing, but I was nonplussed with the 2nd-to-3rd tight ends available there. Scheffler isn't a bad "settle" pick. Pickups and trades are allowed in this league - at the very least, Fred Jackson should have good trade value to the Marshawn Lynch owner.
