Say what you will about the so-called "steroid era", but one of the least talked-about effects of that period of offensive excess is the toll it took on young pitching. Basball essentially lost an entire generation of hurlers, and the recent retirements of the likes of Greg Maddux, Roger Clemens and Randy Johnson left a huge void at the top in a lot of statistical categories.
