2024 Tournament PreviewPredicted to be among the dregs of the Pac-12, the Cougars surprised with a second-place finish in conference and an at-large Tournament berth. The shining moment, so far, is a pair of victories against an Arizona team with national title aspirations. Defensive-minded coach Kyle Smith has the Cougars ranked top 30 in defensive efficiency (per KenPom), but the difference has come on offense with the impact of Idaho transfer Isaac Jones (15.4 ppg, 7.4 rpg), as well as the emergence of redshirt freshman point guard Myles Rice (15.1 ppg, 3.9 apg). A 6-9 senior, Jones shares the frontcourt with a stable of big men, as WSU ranks 29th nationally in defensive rebounding rate. Junior Jaylen Wells is the best 3-point shooter at 42.5 percent. However, the wins against Arizona notwithstanding, the Pac-12 was weak this year, and the Cougars have just one non-conference victory against the KenPom top 100.
