Dillon Gabriel

Dillon Gabriel

QuarterbackQB
Oregon Ducks
2024 Fantasy Outlook
As he approaches his final year of eligibility, Gabriel has the chance to elevate his play under center twofold as he joins a recently successful Oregon squad. Gabriel finished the 2023 season with Oklahoma, passing for 3,660 yards, 30 touchdowns, and six interceptions. The 5-foot-11 field general will jump into an offense under Dan Lanning that enabled Bo Nix to go from 11 passing touchdowns in his sophomore season with Auburn to then 29 touchdowns in his junior year and 45 touchdowns, along with being a Heisman finalist by the time he was a senior. Gabriel will follow a similar path as he transfers to Oregon later in his college football career, and he'll have ample resources to aid his success. With wide receiver Tez Johnson returning, who eclipsed 1,000 receiving yards last season, and Texas A&M transfer Evan Stewart likely jumping into the role of NFL-bound wide receiver Troy Franklin, Gabriel will have all he'll need to lead a successful year, if not a Heisman-level campaign. Struggles at Camp Randall
November 17, 2024
Gabriel completed 22 of 31 passes for 218 yards and one interception during Saturday's 16-13 win versus Wisconsin. He also had 11 rushes for seven yards.
ANALYSIS
Gabriel did not score a touchdown for the first time this season and threw his sixth interception of the year. The sixth-year senior looked notably uncomfortable against a Badgers defense that was able to come up big in multiple high-pressure moments. This included when Gabriel threw a pass behind his receiver leading to a tipped ball that was intercepted in the red zone. Oregon's struggles in the red zone kept the game close all night. But, it scored the crucial touchdown on an 11-yard touchdown run by Jordan James, which was only made possible thanks to a critical first down pickup on 4th-and-9 by Gabriel and tight end Terrance Ferguson. The Ducks will have a much-needed bye week before finishing the regular season with a home game against the rival Huskies on Saturday, Nov. 30.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2023
2022
2021
Gabriel will be the unquestioned starter during the 2023 season and when you consider that Oklahoma averaged 37 points per game and 510 yards per game in his 11 starts, it makes sense why. In the two games where he did not start, the Sooners averaged just 12 points per game and 275 yards per game, a huge drop off in production. The Big 12’s Newcomer of the Year was sensational last season with 25 passing scores and six rushing touchdowns. On the flip side, Gabriel did lose his top targets in Marvin Mims and Brayden Willis, so he will need to rely on Jalil Farooq making a leap or getting contributions from Michigan transfer Andrel Anthony at wide receiver. The Sooners are stacked at running back and the offensive line, so this should be a balanced offense in 2023. Gabriel has the upside to be the best quarterback in the conference and potentially one of the best in the nation.
There are many things that will be different in Norman this fall but high-level quarterback play won’t be among them with Dillon Gabriel reuniting with his former UCF OC, Jeff Lebby, whom he played under in 2019. Gabriel threw 29 touchdowns with a 9.2 YPA that year and followed it up with 32 passing TDs in 10 games as a sophomore before missing much of 2021 with injury. He’s already familiar with the offense and, despite Oklahoma’s transfer portal exodus this offseason, still has a solid supporting cast. Gabriel won’t offer much as a runner, but gaudy passing production should be on the way.
Gabriel ranked first in passing yards per game (357) and turned in a 32:4 TD:INT on 413 attempts, but a new offense complicates his outlook. Gus Malzahn’s offenses at Auburn ranked in the top half of FBS in passing yards per game just once in his last five years (2017). Malzahn should fit his scheme to the talent at UCF, but Gabriel’s overall volume is likely to take a hit. He also loses three of his top targets from 2020. Gabriel has the talent to still produce, and the new scheme could boost his rushing, but it will be challenging for him to replicate his passing numbers.
