How did Southern Miss finish with a winning record in 2022 in spite of using four quarterbacks who all performed below average, including a true freshman who saw the bulk of the action? Frank Gore. The end. OK, here’s some more details on that. The son of the NFL legend of the same name, Gore ran the ball 228 times for 1,382 yards and nine touchdowns. That included a bowl game performance where he ran the ball 21 times for 329 yards and two scores. His yardage total was a new record. Not a LendingTree Bowl record. A record for any bowl game. For good measure, Gore caught 20 passes for 221 yards and completed eight passes for 191 yards and four touchdowns. Since he was a freshman, Gore has excelled for the Golden Eagles. Clearly, the move to the Sun Belt didn’t hurt. We can assume Southern Miss will rely on their workhorse back once more. You can probably pencil in 200 carries and 1,000 yards.
Things got weird for Southern Miss last season. Due to injuries and ineffectiveness at quarterback, the Golden Eagles basically gave up on the quarterback position. Gore, a running back, spent a lot of time as the de facto quarterback. Mostly he ran the ball from that position, but he did throw some passes as well. For 2022, those passing numbers are largely irrelevant. The son of the legendary NFL back of the same name will be running the ball, and with the ball in his hands late in the years Gore excelled. He finished the campaign with 801 yards and five touchdowns as a sophomore, with four of those touchdowns coming in his last three games.
It was fun watching Gore make his college debut while his dad was still an active NFL player, but the younger Gore is more than just his father's namesake. As a true freshman, he rushed 121 times for 708 yards and two touchdowns. After a slow start, he ended up over 100 yards three times on the season. With a campaign under his belt, Gore should be more comfortable on the field, and USM should be more comfortable giving him touches. His dad has shown himself to be a workhorse at the NFL level. Maybe Gore can do that at the college level?
