2024 Pass/Rush Projections
Likely done for 2024
Mertz is expected to miss the remainder of the 2024 season after suffering a non-contact knee injury in Saturday's 23-17 overtime loss to Tennessee, Matt Zenitz of 247Sports.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Mertz sustained the knee injury in the third quarter on a touchdown pass that gave the Gators a 10-0 lead. He'll presumably need surgery to address the knee injury, which will spell an end to his collegiate career. A sixth-year senior who was in his second season at Florida after a four-year run at Wisconsin, Mertz completed 72 of 94 pass attempts (76.6 percent) for 791 yards, six touchdowns and two interceptions while adding 56 yards and a touchdown on the ground over his five appearances for the Gators in 2024. DJ Lagway came on in relief for Mertz in the loss to Tennessee and will take over as Florida's starting quarterback beginning with the Gators' Week 8 game versus Kentucky.

2023 Fantasy Outlook
Anthony Richardson was a top-five pick in the NFL Draft, largely based upon his freakish athletic ability. The Gators brought in Mertz from Wisconsin in the transfer portal, though Mertz represents a play-caller standing in stark contrast to Richardson. Mertz is a pocket-passer, though has completed fewer than 60-percent of his passes during his collegiate career. He did throw a career-high 19 touchdowns a season ago, but has not lived up to his potential. If the change of scenery does not help Mertz, then former Ohio State transfer Jack Miller is next in line. Miller started the Las Vegas Bowl for the Gators, completing 13-of-22 passes for 180 yards. Florida should lean on its very talented backfield this season, but will obviously need production out of Mertz, Miller or Max Brown to stand any chance against Georgia in the SEC East. It would be a surprise if Mertz was not under center in the season opener for the Gators, though.
