Joining Florida
Mertz committed to Florida on Tuesday, joining the program as a transfer from Wisconsin, G. Allan Taylor of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
After emerging as Wisconsin's starting quarterback as a redshirt freshman in 2020 and completing 61.1 percent of his throws for 1,238 yards, nine touchdowns and five interceptions to go with two scores on the ground, Mertz struggled to dramatically improve his performance in his subsequent two seasons as the team's top signal-caller. The rising fifth-year senior ultimately chose to move on from Wisconsin when the team hired new head coach Luke Fickell in late November, but Mertz should be in good position to emerge atop the depth chart in Florida, where Jack Miller and Max Brown represent the only other scholarship options at the position, with both lacking in major experience. Mertz will have up to two years of eligibility to use.
