Lagging back in backup competition
Evers has fallen behind in the quarterback competition and has recently ceded some third-string reps to Marshall Howe and Myles Burkett, Jesse Temple of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
On the plus side, offensive coordinator Phil Longo indicated that Evers "might be the best athlete in the (quarterback) room. He's got a strong arm. What he is working on right now - and we just met one-on-one (Tuesday) - is getting to a point where he understands what's going on out there in the pass game from a protection standpoint, in the run game when do we change some things or make a check or throw an RPO." It sounds as though Evers has some athletic gifts that surpass the others in the quarterback room, but he still has some learning to do to catch up to the rest of the room. While backup duties will be worth monitoring entering the 2023 season, the starting job is essentially Tanner Mordecai's, and another job battle figures to ensue next offseason for the starting gig.
