Leads bowl victory in relief
December 30, 2022
Morgan completed four of seven passes for 58 yards and two touchdowns during Thursday's 28-20 win against Syracuse.
ANALYSIS
Morgan opened the game as the Gophers No. 2 quarterback behind freshman Athan Kaliakmanis, who took control of the team's starting job after Morgan missed the final three games of the season with a concussion. However, the sixth-year senior was called upon after Kaliakmanis went down with a lower-body injury in the second quarter. Morgan then completed the Gophers' second scoring drive of the game with a 20-yard pass into the end zone to wide receiver Daniel Jackson. The graduate signal-caller finished out remainder of his final collegiate game under center for the Golden Gophers. With the longtime starter's eligibility fully exhausted, Morgan ends his Minnesota career second in program history for both career passing yards (9,454) and passing touchdowns (65). It will be worth monitoring Kaliakmanis' injury status given that he'll likely come into 2023 spring practices as the team's starting quarterback.

Morgan failed to live up to lofty expectations as for the second year in a row he threw 10 touchdowns or less. In the 2020 season, he only played seven games so it was understandable but Morgan had no such excuses during the 2021 campaign where he only had one more touchdown (10) than interceptions (9). Clearly, the Minnesota quarterback cannot be relied upon to reach the astounding numbers he had in 2019 but he may have a chance to at least rebound from these past two seasons. Wide receiver Chris Autman-Bell has shown some promise and built a good rapport with Morgan, so the quarterback should be able to produce good numbers with his number one wideout. Also, star running back Mohamed Ibrahim has decided to return so that should take some pressure off Morgan and allow him to take advantage of a strong play-action game. Altogether Morgan shouldn’t be expected to reach the heights of his 2019 season but he has a good opportunity to outshine the duds that he produced the last two seasons.
The extent of Morgan’s success under center during the 2020 season came as a shock to the system to most. While he showed some glimpses of ability as a freshman, Morgan made a huge leap in 2020, compiling 3,253 passing yards and a 30:7 TD:INT ratio on 66.0 completion percentage. It certainly helped Morgan to have two NFL-caliber wide receivers in Tyler Johnson and Rashod Bateman at his disposal, but Bateman returns for another year in 2020 and Chris Autman-Bell showed some promise when given an opportunity. Morgan finished last season tied for 14th nationally in touchdown passes and fourth in quarterback rating (178.70) while joining a group of just four quarterbacks to average more than 10 yards per attempt. While Johnson’s departure certainly stings, Morgan should be positioned for another strong campaign.
After committing to the Gophers prior to 2017, Morgan spent a redshirt to preserve his four years of eligibility with Conor Rhoda and Demry Croft seemingly vying for the starting job. Neither of the quarterbacks remains on the roster heading into 2018 and JUCO transfer Vic Viramontes left the program following spring practice, leaving Morgan and Zack Annexstad to battle for starting honors. Tyler Johnson returns in the Gophers' receiving corps, providing a pair of reliable hands if Morgan can sling it around with some consistency.
