Declares for draft
Hip
January 6, 2020
Tagovailoa (hip) announced Wednesday that he'll enter the 2020 NFL Draft, Bruce Feldman of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Tagovailoa was considered a lock to leave Alabama early for the draft heading into the 2019 season, but the hip surgery he required in November made it uncertain whether he would begin his NFL career. With Tagovailoa having thus far responded well to surgery, he decided it was a good time to enter the professional ranks. His exit leaves the Crimson Tide quarterback job up for grabs heading into 2020, with holdovers Mac Jones and Tua's younger brother, Taulia Tagovailoa, likely heading into the spring as the top options to replace him. Alabama will also add a well-regarded recruit in Bryce Young to the competition in the fall.

2019 Fantasy Outlook
The only thing stopping Tagovailoa from being the top fantasy quarterback is his own team context. Tagovailoa and the Crimson Tide are often so far ahead that they don't need him to play 60 minutes. Tagovailoa had five fourth-quarter appearances with just 17 attempts in those situations. His efficiency makes him a viable fantasy option nonetheless. His 11.2 YPA was third among all quarterbacks dating back to 2009 and he threw a touchdown on 12 percent of his passes. With arguably the best receiving corps in the nation around him, Tagovailoa will be able to put on a strong encore in 2019.
