Named starting QB for Week 1
Calzada will be the Wildcats' starting quarterback for their upcoming game Saturday against Toledo, Pete Thamel of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Since the Wildcats' spring camp, their starting quarterback would be either Calzada or Cutter Boley, scheduled for his second Kentucky season. Eventually, the former won out. In comparison, what the latter lacks is in-game experience, and Calzada has much of it. During 2024, as part of Incarnate Word, he logged more than 4,000 all-purpose yards and exactly 40 touchdowns. Calzada also has SEC experience, having recorded 2,185 passing yards and a 17-9 TD-INT ratio. However, 2021 is when he logged both. The question becomes whether or not Calzada can re-acclimate to SEC football, especially as a more accurate and versatile quarterback, which UIW previously rostered.

2022 Fantasy Outlook
Calzada threw for 2,185 yards and 17 touchdowns last season, spending the majority of the campaign as the starter at Texas A&M. He had offseason surgery on his non-throwing shoulder, though is expected to be healed in time for fall camp. Calzada will contend with TJ Finley, who started the final three games last season for the Tigers, including the Birmingham Bowl. Finley completed just 54.7-percent of his passes in 2021, while Calzada was not much better, coming in at 56.1-percent while with the Aggies. Oregon transfer Robby Ashford will also end up in the mix, as well as Holden Geriner. Calzada has the experience and perhaps the competitive edge of the quartet, though he may not be the most physically talented quarterback in the group.
