2022 Fantasy Outlook
Bell recorded just nine catches for 87 yards on 13 targets in 16 games during the 2021 season and has logged double-digit receptions just twice since entering the NFL in 2015. The veteran tight end still hasn't caught a touchdown pass in his career and heads into the coming season battling with Noah Gray and Jody Fortson for slotting behind top option Travis Kelce. Bell and the Chiefs agreed to a one-year contract Friday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Bell will return to Kansas City for a fourth straight season with the team in 2023. As a backup option behind Travis Kelce at tight end, Bell appeared in three games in 2022, reeling in two catches for 20 yards and a score. With the departures of JuJu Smith-Schuster and Mecole Hardman at wide receiver this offseason, it's possible that Bell could be asked to step into a larger role next season.

Bell spent the 2020 season with the Cowboys but was unable to carve out a consistent role in Dallas, finishing up with just 11 catches for 110 yards on 15 targets. He returns to Kansas City to fill a backup role behind star tight end Travis Kelce. Bell should enter the picture if the Chiefs go with two tight ends, though rookie Noah Gray could be in the mix as well depending on how he fares in training camp.
The journeyman tight end is now on his fifth team in five seasons after signing a one-year deal with the Cowboys. Bell is a capable blocker but extremely limited as a receiver, and the 15 targets he saw in the Chiefs' pass-happy attack last year were his most since he was a rookie in 2015. There could be more opportunities in Dallas behind a less established starter in Blake Jarwin, but even as an occasional red-zone weapon Bell doesn't have much upside, and the next touchdown he scores in the NFL will be his first.
Bell moves on to another franchise, his fourth in five seasons. Despite seeing triple-digit offensive snaps in all four years as a pro, Bell has topped 10 receptions just once, back when he was a rookie in 2015. However, he may be positioned for a larger role in 2019, potentially positioning himself as the backup in an offense that frequently uses sets with two tight ends. Demetrius Harris held that job last season, seeing 366 offensive snaps in 15 games. Even so, it's worth noting Harris hauled in just 12 passes, so, as long as Travis Kelce remains healthy, Bell shouldn't see a ton of targets.
Bell's career is trending in the wrong direction after seeing his receptions (four), yards (85) and targets (nine) all decrease in his sophomore campaign. The converted quarterback wasn't able to see the field on a consistent basis despite not having much competition at the tight end position. The new front office in San Francisco brought in more tight ends to compete for snaps, so Bell will be on the outside looking in if he doesn't show significant improvement this preseason.
Despite being a fourth-round pick, the former Oklahoma quarterback was considered a project heading into the 2015 season due to his lack of experience at tight end. Injuries and the trade of Vernon Davis opened up some snaps for Bell down the stretch, and he finished with 186 yards on 15 receptions. He was a red-zone specialist in college, and his 6-foot-6 frame makes him an excellent target close to the goal line. Vance McDonald is expected to be the starter out of training camp, but there's potential for Bell to elevate himself into that role at some point this season. If he develops as the 49ers hope, he could eventually become a fantasy-relevant tight end.
It was a bit surprising to the 49ers take Bell in the fourth round of the 2015 NFL draft, but a 6-foot-6 frame and a strong combine apparently caught general manager Trent Baalke's attention. Bell - who was formerly a quarterback - finished four of his 16 receptions in the end zone as a senior at Oklahoma in 2014. His ability to score in the red zone could pay dividends for both him and the team, but the rookie tight end will likely require a strong training camp to earn a spot on the 53-man roster to being the season.
