Knee - ACL
August 21, 2024
Keene (knee) was placed on injured reserve Wednesday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
ANALYSIS
Keene tore his ACL in Saturday's exhibition win over the Giants and will now miss the entirety of the 2024 campaign. It's another tough break for the Virginia Tech product who has struggled to get his career on track since missing the 2021 campaign due to meniscus damage.

This Week's Opposing Pass Defense
How does the Chiefs pass defense compare to other NFL teams this season?
The bars represents the team's percentile rank (based on QB Rating Against). The longer the bar, the better their pass defense is. The team and position group ratings only include players that are currently on the roster and not on injured reserve. The list of players in the table only includes defenders with at least 3 attempts against them.

Though neither Keene nor fellow 2020 third-rounder Devin Asiasi are threats to supplant the team's top two tight ends (Hunter Henry and Jonnu Smith), the Patriots no doubt would like to see added contributions from Keene and/or Asiasi. Since being taken 101st overall out of Virginia Tech, Keene has recorded just three catches for 16 yards in six regular-season games. The 23-year-old spent last season on injured reserve, but he's presumably past the knee injury that landed him there and will look to reclaim his roster spot ahead of the 2022 campaign.
Keene, who the Patriots took 101st overall in last year's draft, finished his rookie season with just three catches on five targets for 16 yards in six games. Meanwhile, fellow rookie Devin Asiasi logged two catches on seven targets for 39 yards and a TD in nine contests. It was hardly the production the Patriots were looking for when they used a pair of third-round picks to bolster their tight end depth chart. The team wasted no time seeking upgrades in free agency this offseason, signing Hunter Henry and Jonnu Smith to lucrative deals. In that context, Keene's path to targets in 2021 is murky, but he's versatile enough to earn snaps at fullback, which could help him carve out a complementary role in the New England offense.
After years of enjoying top-level production from Rob Gronkowski, the tight end position became largely an afterthought in the Patriots' passing game last season. As April's NFL Draft approached, the Patriots' depth chart at the position consisted of Matt LaCosse and Ryan Izzo. With that in mind, the team doubled down by taken both Keene and Devin Asiasi in the third round. Both players have some long-term fantasy upside, but with a QB transition on tap in the wake of Tom Brady's departure, neither figures to be a reliable lineup option out of the gate. Keene posted modest volume at Virginia Tech, but his per-target efficiency was notable thanks to his standout work after the catch. With an athletic profile similar to Austin Hooper's, the 6-4, 253-pound Keene - who just turned 21 in April - has the potential to ascend to a starting job, especially now that LaCosse has opted out of the 2020 season.

Visits with Giants

September 2, 2022
Keene had a visit with the Giants on Thursday, Ben Volin of the Boston Globe reports.
ANALYSIS
Keene has been trying to land with another team since being let go by the Patriots, as the tight end also got a look from the 49ers recently. New York has a larger need at the position, as the Giants' inexperience at tight end is accompanied by some injury issues heading into the season. Daniel Bellinger has a concussion and Chris Myarick is dealing with a foot injury, leaving Tanner Hudson as the only fully healthy tight end on the roster at the moment.
