Hunter Renfrow

27-Year-Old Wide ReceiverWR
Las Vegas Raiders
2023 Fantasy Outlook
After making his first career Pro Bowl in 2021, a slew of injuries combined with the arrival of Davante Adams caused Renfrow's production to severely dip, as the slot man closed the 2022 season with 36 receptions for 330 yards and two touchdowns on 50 targets in 10 games while Adams commanded a career-high 180 total targets. The Raiders traded tight end Darren Waller to the Giants this offseason, but free-agent additions Jakobi Meyers and DeAndre Carter are each capable of vulturing slot reps, which could land Renfrow on the trade block at some point. Given that he remains in Las Vegas, however, Renfrow's utility in PPR formats could potentially rebound if he earns enough playing time, as quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo typically lacks in the air-yards department. Perfect effort against Chiefs
WRLas Vegas Raiders
January 7, 2023
Renfrow recorded seven receptions on seven targets for 63 yards and a touchdown in Saturday's 31-13 loss to the Chiefs.
ANALYSIS
Renfrow paced the Raiders in catches after commanding seven targets for the second time in his last three games. He made the most of that opportunity and showed strong rapport with Jarrett Stidham by hauling in passes of 16 and 14 yards to highlight his day. Renfrow also caught his second touchdown of the season on an 11-yard reception midway through the fourth quarter. After breaking out in 2021, Renfrow was limited to only 10 games this season and otherwise saw a sharp downturn in his involvement in the offense thanks to the addition of Davante Adams. Nevertheless, Renfrow will be back with the team in 2023 as he enters the final year of his contract.

Those who referred to Renfrow as “The Accountant” had it right — he's reliable, and always looks comfortable working between the numbers. The 2019 fifth-round pick was an efficient, mid-volume slot specialist his first two NFL seasons, before breaking out last year as the Raiders' leader in targets, catches, yards and touchdowns. Six missed games from TE Darren Waller played a role, with Renfrow averaging 8.1 targets in those games compared to 7.2 in the 11 games Waller played. Still, that's a huge increase from 2019 (5.5 per game) and 2020 (4.8), with Renfrow arguably challenging Waller for alpha status even when both were healthy. It'll be a different story in 2022, as new Raider Davante Adams combines some of Waller's best traits (size, physicality) with some of Renfrow's (crafty route-running, precise footwork). The new setup has Renfrow as Option B or C, which is good news for the Raiders but less so for fantasy managers. That said, it's not out of the question for Adams, Waller and Renfrow to approach their recent production, as the Raiders don't have great depth behind them and could feature a pass-first offense under new coach Josh McDaniels. You might say Renfrow has the benefit of familiarity, but Waller has actually been with the Raiders a bit longer, and Adams was QB Derek Carr's favorite target back in their Fresno State days.
Renfrow had another solid year last season, operating almost exclusively from the slot — 11.7 YPC, 8.5 YPT — but the volume (77 targets) was insufficient to support much overall production. The problem is the Raiders don’t seem clear on what they’re doing with their receiving corps. Last year they used first- and third-round picks on receivers, but decided to feature journeyman Nelson Agholor, now with the Patriots, as their top perimeter target for much of the year. Those picks, Henry Ruggs and Bryan Edwards, should see more work in Year 2, and the team also signed speedster John Brown. But Renfrow should still have a role, albeit not a huge one, given the presence of tight end Darren Waller, the team’s best and most prolific pass catcher. At 5-10, 185, and with modest 4.59 speed, Renfrow is essentially slot-only, using his quickness and route-running to get open and make plays in the short and intermediate areas.
Renfrow had a solid rookie season, averaging an impressive 12.3 YPC and 8.5 YPT while lining up almost exclusively in the slot, where per-play numbers tend to be more modest. He played only 13 games, but surged down the stretch with back-to-back 100-yard games and touchdowns in Weeks 16 and 17. At 5-10, 185, and with poor timed speed (4.59 40), Renfrow isn't much of a physical specimen, but he's quick, athletic, runs good routes and knows how to get open. Renfrow struggled with drops - six on only 71 targets - but coming out of college, there was no knock on his hands. Renfrow returns as the Raiders' top slot option, but he and Tyrell Williams should get plenty of competition for targets from rookie speedster Henry Ruggs, the first receiver taken in the draft, and Bryan Edwards, whom the team added in Round 3. Moreover, tight end Darren Waller will again have a substantial role, capping Renfrow's target ceiling.
A two-time CFP national champion at Clemson, Renfrow will now join the Raiders after being selected 149th overall in the 2019 NFL Draft. The 5-foot-10, 184-pound receiver has immediately made a significant push to secure the vacancy at slot receiver in Oakland, and he was even listed as the starter on the team's first unofficial depth chart prior to their first game of the preseason. If Renfrow ultimately wins the starting spot over fellow offseason addition Ryan Grant heading into Week 1 of the regular season, he could provide value right off the bat in PPR formats behind Tyrell Williams.
