February 26, 2025
The Buccaneers informed Whitehead (neck) on Wednesday that his $3.75 million team option for 2025 will be declined, making him an unrestricted free agent when the new league year begins March 12, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Tampa Bay will move on from the soon-to-be 28-year-old safety after he started 12 games in 2024 and finished with 79 tackles (49 solo) and three pass breakups. He missed the team's regular-season finale and its loss to the Commanders in the wild-card round due to a neck injury sustained in a car accident, but his availability for the start of the 2025 season doesn't appear to be in any peril.

Whitehead returns to Tampa Bay after a two-year Jets tenure, and he's back as an even more effective player than he was during his initial Bucs stint. The 27-year-old is coming off a 2023 season in which he recorded a career-high 97 tackles and four interceptions, while also tying a personal best with nine total pass breakups. Whitehead will once again line up next to stellar free safety Antoine Winfield, with whom he played in 2020 and 2021. An above-average tackler who's seemingly improved his ability to get his hands on the ball every season, Whitehead profiles as a steady IDP option.
Whitehead had an up-and-down first year with the Jets in 2022. He had a career-high 89 tackles while adding two interceptions and eight passes defensed, though the 2018 fourth-rounder would have been even more productive if he hadn't taken numerous bad angles in both run defense and pass coverage. In every season of his five-year career, the 26-year-old has posted at least 69 tackles and four passes defensed. He should have little trouble clearing those benchmarks again in 2023, as there's little competition for snaps at safety on the roster.
Whitehead signed a two-year deal with the Jets in the offseason and is expected to start at free safety after totaling between 69 and 76 tackles in each of his first four seasons with the Buccaneers. Still just 25 years old, Whitehead could find himself playing an even more prominent role on a defense with significantly less talent around him.
Whitehead started all 16 games for the first time in his three-year career in 2020, finishing with 74 tackles, two sacks, two interceptions, four pass defenses, one fumble recovery and one forced fumble. He allowed a completion percentage below 60 percent in primary coverage for a second straight season, and he battled through a torn labrum in his shoulder in the playoffs before getting surgery after Super Bowl LV. Raven Greene was signed for depth purposes this offseason, but Whitehead once again should hold down the starting free safety job and offer consistent value as an IDP.
Whitehead was even more involved during his second pro campaign in 2019, logging a whopping 953 defensive snaps despite seeing his season end two games early due to a hamstring injury. The versatile 2018 fourth-round pick also recorded an additional 129 plays on return and coverage units, and he managed to break up nine passes and record his first career interception. The University of Pittsburgh product's contributions were particularly valued during a season that 2017 second-round pick Justin Evans missed altogether because of an Achilles injury. With Evans presumably healthy by the time training camp starts, Whitehead likely will need to battle him for the starting free safety job this summer.
Whitehead ultimately was relied upon a lot more than would have been initially expected of a fourth-round rookie last season. The former Pitt Panther appeared in 15 games and logged 76 tackles (61 solo) and four defensed passes. A season-ending knee injury to Chris Conte and a subsequent toe issue that curtailed Justin Evans' campaign were responsible for affording Whitehead plenty of on-the-job training. Whitehead's solid performance gives him the inside track to the starting free safety job heading into training camp, and Whitehead once again could prove to be a productive IDP option in Year 2 of his career if he remains atop the depth chart throughout the season.

Set to hit free agency
SFree Agent
February 27, 2025
Whitehead will become an unrestricted free agent, per Jenna Laine of ESPN.com, as the Buccaneers have informed the safety they won't be picking up his option for 2025.
ANALYSIS
Whitehead struggled when healthy in 2024, then dealt with a torn pectoral muscle down the stretch before suffering additional injuries in a car accident, including a neck injury. General manager Jason Licht wouldn't rule out the possibility of a reunion with Whitehead, but Tampa Bay would only be interested at a cap hit lower than the $4.5 million Whitehead would have made in 2025 had the Buccaneers picked up his option.
