ANALYSIS
The veteran safety from Virginia was designated a post-June 1 cut by the Browns in late February but will now remain in the AFC North after signing with the Steelers on Monday. Thornhill appeared in 22 games over his last two seasons in Cleveland, recording 103 total tackles and four passes defended. Now in Pittsburgh, the 29-year-old is expected to compete with DeShon Elliott for a starting safety position alongside Minkah Fitzpatrick.

Thornhill played hurt and had a subpar campaign in 2023, his first with Cleveland. He was seen as important addition - a playoff-experienced safety while with Kansas City that could improve the team's defense - and the Browns still feel the same way about the 28-year-old. One good thing to come out of his health issues is that back-end partner Grant Delpit took a leap while D'Anthony Bell and Ronnie Hickman proved to be capable. A healthy Thornhill will return as a starter and look to reclaim the playmaking ability that enticed the Browns into signing him in 2023.
The Browns had several defensive needs and took care of free safety early in free agency when adding Thornhill, a four-year veteran with a load of big-game experience in the Chiefs' secondary. Under new defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz, Thornhill will reprise the role he held in Kansas City -- as a roving deep cover safety capable of making game-changing plays (three picks in 2022) for a team that ranked 23rd in turnovers last year. The Browns are going all in this year, and Thornhill's playoff experience is expected to help transition Cleveland into a legitimate postseason threat.
After a rookie season during which he graded out highly in pass coverage and reasonably well in the other facets of the game, Thornhill's second season marked a bit of a step back in that regard. He finished out 2020 with just 41 tackles (33 solo) and turned in only one interception after notching three as a rookie. Even so, Thornhill should claim a hefty role at the back end of the Chiefs' defense again in 2021.
Thornhill's rookie season couldn't have gone much better, as the rookie finished out the year with the Super Bowl champs having amassed 58 tackles (42 solo) and three interceptions (one for a touchdown) over 1,012 defensive snaps. When healthy, Thornhill should resume his duties alongside Tyrann Mathieu, though Daniel Sorenson could play a larger role early if Thornhill isn't ready to open 2020.

June 27, 2022
Thornhill feels fully healthy this offseason for the first time since his rookie year and thinks he's ready to fill the shoes of Tyrann Mathieu in the Kansas City secondary, Adam Teicher of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The safety is heading into the final year of his rookie contract, and while he has yet to miss a regular-season game in his career, Thornhill has played through numerous minor injuries. With Mathieu now in New Orleans, Thornhill has a chance to emerge from his shadow and predicts he'll be able to put up numbers worthy of a berth on the All-Pro team.
