Matthew Judon

Matthew Judon

31-Year-Old LinebackerLB
New England Patriots
2024 Fantasy Outlook
Judon, who suffered a torn right biceps Week 4 of last season, was as a result limited to 13 tackles and four sacks in 2023, but when he's healthy the 31-year-old can be a productive pass rusher, given that he racked up a team high 15.5 sacks in 2022. Now that he's past his injury, he'll remain a core member of the Patriots defense under new coordinator DeMarcus Covington. Judon's looming return fortifies the team's linebacking corps, and a return to IDP relevance seems likely for Judon - who recorded back-to-back 60-tackle efforts in 2021 and 2022 - in his fourth campaign with New England. Reports to training camp
LBNew England Patriots
July 23, 2024
Judon reported to Patriots' training camp Tuesday, Doug Kyed of the Boston Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
The Patriots previously offered a contract to Judon, but the two sides still appear to be far apart on a new deal, per Henry McKenna of FoxSports.com. Judon is set to make $6.5 million in the final year of his contract, and he's coming off a 2023 campaign in which he missed the final 13 regular-season games due to a torn biceps. The 2016 fifth-round pick is still one of the most formidable pass rushers in the league, having registered 28.0 sacks across 2021 and 2022. For now, it appears Judon is willing to participate in training camp while negotiating a new deal.

In his second year with the Patriots, Judon finished the 2022 season with 60 tackles, a team-high 15.5 sacks and two forced fumbles in 17 games. As long as he continues to make his mark as a pass rusher - he also logged 12.5 sacks in 2021 - the 6-3, 261-pound linebacker will remain a cornerstone of New England's defense, as well as a player worthy of IDP consideration.
Judon, who signed a four-year, $54.5 million contract with the Patriots prior to the 2021 season, finished his first campaign with the team with 60 tackles and a fumble recovery to go with a team-high 12.5 sacks (tied for the seventh-highest mark in the NFL) in 17 games. The linebacker turns 30 in August and once again will be counted on to be a key cog in the Patriots defense, thanks to his pass-rushing utility.
Judon, who the Patriots signed to a four-year, $54.5 million contract this past offseason, has never reached double-digit sacks, but he does have six or more in four straight seasons, with no fewer than 19 QB hits each of those years. With New England, Judon - who logged 51 tackles in 14 games last year - will see regular snaps on the edge, a context that could allow him to surface as an IDP option if he's able to up his pass-rushing production in 2021.
Judon is playing under the franchise tag after an impressive 2019 in which he led the Ravens in sacks (9.5) and forced fumbles (4). He was the team's only reliable pass-rusher as no other Raven had more than 5.0 sacks on the year. Judon's sack numbers were no fluke, either as he was generating consistent pressure on the quarterback. His 33 quarterback hits ranked fourth in the league and he trailed the league leader, Shaquil Barrett, by four hits. Even if Baltimore dials back its blitz-heavy approach in 2020, it'll still likely count on Judon to generate pressure off the edge as its best pass-rusher.
Judon managed to stave off stiff competition for playing time and log over 650 snaps for the second consecutive year in 2018. Even though Judon rose to the challenge and picked up seven sacks, the Ravens continued to add depth on the edge this offseason to push him. Former Raven Pernell McPhee was signed late in free agency and Baltimore also spent a draft pick on the NCAA's all-time sack leader, Jaylon Ferguson. Judon still projects to see the most playing time of that trio, but it'd be naive to see those signings and think that the Ravens won't use a deep rotation at right outside linebacker. Look for Judon to have a snap count similar to last year's, which caps his ceiling and makes him a consideration only in deeper IDP formats.
Judon has gone from an unheralded fifth-round selection out of Grand Valley State to a vital cog in the Ravens linebacking corps. The team has a deep pass rush rotation, but Judon still managed to hold off touted draft picks like Tim Williams and Tyus Bowser last season en route to racking up eight sacks. Judon will once again be the starting weakside 'backer, though he'll need to continue his per-snap efficiency to keep that job.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Might get dealt without extension
LBNew England Patriots
July 15, 2024
Judon could be traded before the beginning of the regular season if the Patriots aren't able to work out a new deal with the edge rusher, Greg Bedard of the Boston Sports Journal reports.
ANALYSIS
Bedard believes that Judon won't play for New England in 2024 on his current contract, and the two sides don't seem close on working out an extension or even a reworked one-year deal with heavy incentives. Judon has indicated that he won't hold out from training camp as he did last season, but the club may still prefer to trade him rather than watch him leave for nothing in free agency next year. The 31-year-old played only four games last season due to a torn bicep, but he's recorded 32.0 sacks in his last 38 NFL games dating back to 2021.
