QBChicago Bears
March 30, 2023
The Bears re-signed Peterman on Thursday, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Peterman, who's entering his seventh NFL campaign, is now slated to remain in Chicago for a second consecutive year following Thursday's signing. The 28-year-old will presumably compete against the newly-acquired PJ Walker throughout the offseason for the Bears' backup quarterback job behind starter Justin Fields.

The Raiders are bringing Peterman back on a one-year contract extension with a base salary of $1 million in 2021, as the former Pittsburgh Panther expects to retain his role as the third option at quarterback behind Derek Carr and Marcus Mariota. Peterman logged only 11 offensive snaps in limited action last season, completing 3 of 5 pass attempts for 25 yards Week 12 against the Falcons.
Peterman, who hasn't played a regular season snap since Week 9 of the 2018 campaign as a member of the Bills, spent 2019 on injured reserve with an elbow injury while Mike Glennon handled backup quarterback duties. Glennon's eventual departure for Jacksonville hasn't resulted in an immediate promotion for Peterman behind starter Derek Carr, however, as the Raiders brought in Marcus Mariota this offseason. Peterman could still land a roster spot in Las Vegas if they elect to keep three quarterbacks.
Despite posting a 1:4 TD:INT ratio through his first eight games in the NFL, coach Jon Gruden somehow still sees enough in Peterman to have brought him over to Oakland in an effort to compete with Mike Glennon for the primary backup role at quarterback behind Derek Carr. In two starts with the Bills last season, Peterman infamously tossed five picks to zero touchdowns, though he did complete 31 of 49 passes in a 41-9 loss to the Bears while averaging a measly 3.84 yards per attempt. Peterman's spot on the 53-man roster is not guaranteed, but he'll likely just need to beat out Landry Jones to land third on the team's QB depth chart.
The second-year triggerman out of Pitt should benefit from a full year in the league and an offseason to get acquainted to life in the pros. A quarterback room with rookie Josh Allen and largely untested free-agent acquisition AJ McCarron could have a fluid depth chart in the early going. Allen is certainly the quarterback of the future, but who is the quarterback of the present? In all likelihood, it'll be McCarron to start the season, but Peterman should have an opportunity to challenge for the job.
Peterman was regarded by some pundits as the most "pro-ready" quarterback in this year's draft, but waited until the fifth round and pick No. 171 to be selected by the Bills. The organization has shown support to incumbent Tyrod Taylor, but drafting Peterman opens the door to future competition.
