2023 Fantasy Outlook

Vitek Vanecek had a good season as the Devils' starter in 2022-23, but Akira Schmid was also excellent when he got a chance to play. Schmid's strong performance forced the team to go with three netminders at times, and at 23 years old, Schmid's still got plenty of room to grow after posting a 2.13 GAA and a .922 save percentage over 18 regular-season contests last year. Schmid enters 2023-24 as the clear backup, but he should playcloser to 30 games this season, which gives him enough appeal to be a third or fourth goalie in most fantasy formats. If Vanecek struggles or goes down with an injury, Schmid will have a clear path to starter-level usage, at least temporarily. Don't forget about the youngster on draft day. Read Past Outlooks

Schmid was Dr. Jeckyl and Mr. Hyde in his nine postseason appearances. He could follow a 31-save shutout by allowing three goals on 11 shots. He may be the goaltender of the future in New Jersey, but the postseason left managers with more questions than answers about Schmid.
