2025 Fantasy Outlook
Lyon had a 14-9-1 record, 2.81 GAA and .896 save percentage in 30 appearances with Detroit in 2024-25. While those numbers aren’t impressive, Detroit wasn’t a great team defensively, and Lyon’s plus-2.4 goals saved above expected suggests he held his own. With that work behind him, Lyon joined Buffalo over the summer on a two-year deal. It’s an interesting situation because Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen has shown promise, but he hasn’t done enough to gain a full lock on Buffalo’s starter role. Meanwhile, Devon Levi has failed to establish himself at the NHL level despite his substantial potential. There’s a path for Lyon to steal the No. 1 job for significant stretches, but it’s also possible he eventually finds himself as the No. 3 option. Pencil Lyon in for 20-30 games with mediocre results, but keep in the back of your mind that there’s plenty of room for variance. Read Past Outlooks

Strong in loss to Rangers
Lyon made 29 saves in a 4-0 loss to the Rangers on Thursday. He allowed three goals.
ANALYSIS
The game was closer than the score suggests. Lyon kept the game at 1-0 until Carson Soucy scored at 14:46 of the third frame. He's the Sabres starter now with Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen on the shelf with a lower-body injury. Lyon's skills are better suited for back-up duty, but he did put up a 2.81 GAA in 30 games last season.

Lyon had a remarkable season for the Wings in 2023-24, becoming the starter after inking a deal to be the team's third stringer. With 39 previous NHL games on his resume, the journeyman played in 44 games last season, delivering a 21-18-5 record, 3.05 GAA and .904 save percentage. Lyon carried that momentum into the IIHF Worlds for Team USA, stopping 47 of 50 shots through two tournament games before suffering a finger injury. If he's healthy, Lyon will battle Ville Husso to back up newcomer Cam Talbot and get 25-plus starts in the role. Worst case, the Wings carry both Lyon and Husso into the season, and the game-splits all but eliminate any fantasy value for both men.

ANALYSIS
Lyon looks set to feature in the season opener for the Sabres since Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen is on injured reserve with a lower-body injury. The 32-year-old Lyon was poised to start the 2025-26 campaign as the No. 2 behind Luukkonen, but that was before the team picked up Colten Ellis off the waiver wire from St. Louis. Now the backup situation has gotten much more uncertain, but a strong performance by Lyon on Thursday could bolster his resume.
